Today Air Serbia launches its new New York JFK – Belgrade non-stop with an Airbus A330 they’ve named for Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla.
I had to laugh on Tuesday when I was One Mile at a Time giving away business class seats on Air Serbia’s new flight — because I had scheduled to do the exact same thing, coinciding with the route’s launch.
As is common, I received a PR e-mail. They offered a giveaway of a couple of coach tickets. I imagine Lucky received the same. I asked if we could make it business class tickets, and I’d be happy to share those with readers.
Air Serbia is an Etihad partner airline, and they’re great to work with. The Air Serbia Airbus A330 has a lie flat business class. So I was thrilled to be able to share this as a giveaway.
And for those of you with Citi ThankYou Rewards, you can transfer points to Etihad Guest and redeem them for travel on Air Serbia. New York JFK – Belgrade costs 44,970 miles each way in economy or 64,082 miles in business class. Upgrade awards are available as well.
The new 4511 mile, 8 hour 50 minute flight is an opportunity for readers to visit Serbia, which is still off the beaten path for many in the US. And it’s a great place to connect to Eastern Europe and the Mideast.
Service is 5 times weekly, with flight schedules varying by day of week.
Air Serbia’s Business Class — What I’m Giving Away to Readers!
Air Serbia’s long haul business class offers fully flat seating. Seats are in a herringbone configuration similar to Virgin Atlantic’s business class.
Air Serbia’s Lounge at New York JFK
Air Serbia operates out of New York JFK Terminal 4. That’s the same terminal as Etihad, and Air Serbia premium passengers have access to Etihad’s new lounge which is certainly one of the better airport lounges in the United States.
Etihad doesn’t contract their lounge out to any other airlines. So Air Serbia passengers are the first flyers not on Etihad to be able to access this lounge which I wrote about back in March.
The lounge features both a hot and cold buffet, sit down dining from a great menu, and a very nice bar. There are fantastic tarmac views all alongside as well. Arrive early, have a drink and a meal, and you’ll be well-prepared to sleep onboard.
Things to Do in Serbia
I have never been to Serbia, and I admit I’m a bit jealous of the reader that wins the tickets because there’s no better way to go than non-stop in a good business class (and free). I’ve never taken a comped trip of this sort, I always pass them along to readers.
Since I don’t have suggestions of what to do while you’re there, I figured what better advice to get than from Air Serbia itself. So I asked for some suggestions. Here’s what they offered:
- Ada Ciganlija: Known colloquially as “Belgrade’s Sea” the white pebbled beach is actually a lake made by the Sava River, enjoyed by thousands in the summer who swim and flock to the many surrounding cafes.
- Belgrade Fortress: One of the world’s oldest strongholds, its location between the Sava and Danube made it a cultural dispute for ages. While invaded more than 100 times, it is currently the largest free attraction of the city.
- Grab a Rajika: As one of the largest plum exporters in the world, Belgrade is known for its national drink, a fruit brandy known as the Rakija. Take in the thriving nightlife the city is famous for with a sip (or glass).
- Saint Petka’s Chapel: Situated outside the Kalemegdan fortress, this is one of the smallest and most beautiful churches in the city, originally built in 1867. Several legends surround this chapel, many claiming the spring that runs beneath it contains healing powers.
- Knez Mihailova: Nestled between Terazije Square and Kalemegdan, this promenade is the central meeting point and epicenter of the city for most Belgradians. It is considered one of the most beautiful and historic pedestrian streets in all of Eastern Europe.
Ric Garrido (of Loyalty Traveler) notes that “the city is known for dance clubs and all-night party boats on the Danube in summer. It is considered one of the hot up and coming nightlife spots of Europe for travelers. And very inexpensive by US standards.”
Air Serbia as a Great Connecting Option
Serving more than 40 destinations, Air Serbia is a great way to get to places like:
- Athens and Thessaloniki
- Beirut and Tel Aviv as well as Istanbul and Abu Dhabi
- Bucharest, Sofia, Warsaw and Prague
- Kiev, Ukraine and multiple destinations in Russia
- Cyprus and Malta
- Dubrovnik, Pula, Split, and Zagreb in Croatia

Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Airport terminal 2 allows 30 minute domestic connections — and an online Air Serbia-Air Serbia international connection is permitted with just 45 minutes. It’s an easier connection to make than Frankfurt, Paris Charles de Gaulle, or London Heathrow for sure.

Pity you are not giving tickets the other way!
(I am in Belgrade, though I will probably be going to China to teach from September on; meanwhile only 1 or maybe 2 shorthaul RT flights in Europe.
Wouldn`t mind a couple of days to New York so I wish you were giving flights the other way; though, of course, it would have been better to have gooten them for the offical awarding of the prize I won two weeks ago, but they had only told me I was shortlisted and I didn`t want to fly just on a chance of MAYBE winning; had I known I had won for sure, I would have flown, of course.)
Anyway, whoever gets the tickets, enjoy the trip.

And the lounge in BEG is AMAZING!!! Its not big but its still very good, I actually prefer it over the TK IST lounge cause in BEG you can actually take a shower, TK IST lounge you need to wait 3+hours, happened to me every time I was at the lounge this year and I was there quite a lot.
Also the food is really good, not just typical lounge snacks but REAL food, much better than any of the U.S. airline lounges.

2. I’d love to see the Belgrade fortress. And drink all the coffee!
What’s the best thing about Air Serbia’s new New York JFK – Belgrade non-stop flight? Non-Stop means I don’t have top deal with long layovers in crazy places along the way, thanks.
When visiting Serbia I most want to have a glass of Rajika and take in the thriving nightlife the city is famous for, you bet.

I want to experience the nightlife on the many party boats that I have heard about in Belgrade.
My favorite thing about the flight is the addition of a new, convenient non-stop option from the US to Eastern Europe. I love traveling to the Balkans, but it is often a pain to find flights to that part of Eastern Europe. Flying business class only makes the flight better.
I really want to visit the Nikola Tesla museum
1) The best thing about this new route to me is an opportunity to connect in a non-traditional airport for off the beaten path destinations!
The best thing about this flight is the lack of layovers. I hate spending precious vacation time in an airport.
Q1: It is great to have a non-stop option from New York to one of Eastern Europe’s gateway cities, and the lie-flat seats + 8:50 flight = great sleeping time while on board
Q2: I would like to enjoy the historical sights, the nightlife and party boats, and the great cuisine & Rakija
Travel to another part of the world in lie-flat

The best thing for me for the non-stop flight is all the connecting you can do. I love to travel and easy travel is better.
A direct connection to the Balkan countries, in lie-flat seats in business no less, is so valuable. The connections from there – Malta, Cyprus, Turkey and so on, ae a dream.
I’d visit the historic sites in Belgrade and then go on to more destinations.
While visiting Serbia I would find the art, culture and museums and see, and drink in as much as I could!!!

Belgrade Fortress would be my first stop in Serbia
Best part of the flight would be the chance to visit the Etihad lounge!
The herribone seat arrangement looks super comfy, and if I ever have the opportunity to fly business class long-haul, that would be the way I would like to travel. It sure looks better than airlines like AirFrance, BA, Swiss, etc.
1. Flight makes Serbian culture and experiences even more accessible to Americans and American culture and experiences more accessible to Serbians.
I am 23, and the only young single among my friends, all of whom are in committed long-term relationships. Over the course of a year I’ve watched them jump from college graduate to middle age, My entertainment has been at-home movie nights, pot luck dinners, and weekend shopping at Crate & Barrel and IKEA. I’m ready to move on, and I am in the process of planning a year of (low budget) travel–hopefully I will meet other young, adventuresome souls like myself.
So naturally I am going to answer: Enjoy Belgrade’s nightlife! .
2. I want my year-old son to meet and experience the true Serbian culture and people so he can grow up with a love for people across all cultures.

2. Navigating local transit always reveals characteristics of a foreign place. Can’t wait to do this in Serbia.
I want to go to the Frescoe’s Gallery to view the medieval art to try to find evidence of my rare breed dog known as the “Lowchen”.
Those sumptuous lie-flat seats will let me sleep all long enough to have enough energy to invade the Belgrade Fortress! The 101st time’s a charm!
A wonderful opportunity to visit a place far far away where my great-aunt was in a concentration camp many years ago in Siberia
2. Getting to see my family in Serbia, whom I rarely have the opportunity to visit in part due to the annoying flight schedules.
1. Flying non-stop from the US directly into Belgrade instead of the short-haul, less sleep nonsense of a connection in UK or Germany
I’d like to visit the Belgrade Fortress
The comfortable non-stop flight and the ability to tour and then take trips to other countries.
Looking at the photographs, I instantly recognized the biz seats (and therefore the aircraft) as Jet Airways’ business class herringbone seats.
They are super-comfy and I would love to fly this route on an ex-9W bird – probably a A332, as they are now using A333s with a different (like Swiss (LX)) seat config in business.
Never been to Serbia, but have a lot of Serbian friends…
Thanks for arranging this contest Gary – best luck to all!
To meet my new found relatives living in Poljna and Krusevac. Would love to fly a non-stop journey to my ancestral home. I know this contest is over but if another one comes up. I will be a happy woman
