Got airberlin (or Lufthansa) Status? Finnair Will Match

With airberlin disappearing faster than a pack of smokes at an AA meeting, oneworld partner Finnair is swooping in to pick up their customers. And while they’re at it they’re looking for Star Alliance member Lufthansa’s customers as well. Here’s details of their status match offer.

Finnair will:

  • Match to Silver status (oneworld ruby)
  • Offer a challenge to Gold (oneworld sapphire)

What’s more, if you’re an airberlin topbonus or Lufthansa Miles & More tier member, we will now match your tier to Finnair Plus Silver so that you can continue enjoying tier benefits. Thus, if you are at least a topbonus Silver member or a Miles & More Frequent Traveller, you’ll become a Finnair Plus Silver member right away.

For topbonus Gold and Platinum members as well as Miles & More Senator and HON Circle members we also offer a Gold Challenge in addition to the instant Silver membership. The Gold Challenge means you can move up to the Finnair Plus Gold tier with only half the usual amount of tier points or qualifying flights within the next six months – that’s only 40,000 tier points or 23 flights.

You have to become a Finnair Plus member if you aren’t one already, and provide:

  • Copy of a valid topbonus or Miles & More tier card
  • Copy of the last 12 months’ topbonus or Miles & More mileage summary
  • Finnair Plus membership number

They’ll upgrade status to silver within 7-14 days, and the Gold challenge for Miles & More Senator and above and airberlin Golds and above requires 40,000 tier points or 23 qualifying flights by March 31, 2018.

Plenty of US folks had status matched to air berlin. That status is still valid.. for now. This is an opportunity to extend some status.

Now 40,000 tier points is a lot for a Gold challenge, but mid-tier oneworld status gets you pretty much everything that British Airways Silver does, and for US-based frequent flyers that means access to American’s Flagship (business class) lounges. So far the New York JFK lounge and the Chicago O’Hare lounge are open with the Miami and Los Angeles lounges slated to open their doors later this year.

  1. After a double take, I gathered the AA reference was to Alcoholics Anonymous, where back in the day, they were renowned for smoking a lot — especially soon after quitting drinking.

  2. 40k Tier points are actually not too bad, as AA Economy counts at 100% of the *kilometers*, not miles flown – so its only 24,855 miles flown. Half of AA Platinum!
