Back in March, American introduced an award map to help members find available award seats. You enter your starting city and the number of miles you want to spend. It will show you the places you can go.
They’re promoting it with a 25,000 mile a day sweepstakes, the sort of thing I find generally uninteresting. I know there are lots of lucky people out there, I don’t generally enter these which probably also explains why I don’t generally win either.
But what’s worth noting is the award redemption rebate which is paired with the sweepstakes and more or less buried in the fine print.
Once you watch their video about the award map, and click through to open up the map, you are given the chance to register for the sweepstakes.
That also makes you eligible for 2,500 miles off an AAdvantage award ticket. (Partner awards are eligible.)
Redeem online (which limits the number of partners you can use) by July 24 for travel between September 4 and November 20.
One rebate per AAdvantage account, and 2500 mile rebate should post 6-8 weeks after travel.
Here is the fine print:
“Term & Conditions for 2,500 miles redemption: Member must register for Award Map promo before redemption occurs. Members will receive 2,500 miles off flight award redemption for AA and partner flights. Miles must be redeemed during Jun 26-Jul 24, 2013 for travel between Sep 4-Nov 20, 2013. Award itinerary must be booked online on aa.com. Each AAdvantage member account is only eligible for one rebate during this promo. Please allow for 6-8 weeks for miles to be posted to your account, after travel occurs. Miles will be credited to the AAdvantage member account from which the redemption occurs.”
This looks like a good deal for a one-way domestic award for only 10K miles after the rebate. Further, if you have a Citi AAdvantage card, you will earn an additional 10% (1,250 miles), further reducing the cost to 8,750 AA miles.
Just signed up for the promo for myself, my brother, and my parents. Now we just have to remember to book an award somewhere…
