Greatest Pilot Ever Turns Aircraft Around So All Passengers Can See Northern Lights [Roundup]

News and notes from around the interweb:

  • Details of United’s new domestic first class menu

  • This is amazing. Greatest captain ever.

  • A look at new Alaska Airlines meals Alaska does better than any other airline at domestic first class catering.

  • Celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor slams Air India catering. The airline, for its part, promises to do better.

  • The race to replace Qantas CEO Alan Joyce, expected to announce his retirement this year (Sydney Morning Herald, HT: Don W)

[T]hanks to this week’s appointment of former Air New Zealand executive Cam Wallace to head up Qantas’ international and freight divisions, there is now a three-horse race to the CEO finish line.

The two other internal candidates considered to be in contention are the head of its loyalty program, Olivia Wirth, and its chief financial officer, Vanessa Hudson.

  • Norse Atlantic Airways – the ‘new Norwegian long haul’, is adding several long haul flights to the U.S. from London Gatwick. Adding Boston just before the winter flying season seems… eek. There will be a lot of empty planes and cheap fares.

As a consumer I love the competition. But for someone who wants the airline to succeed, they really need places to send their planes in winter – routes people will actually fly at prices that will cover their cost.

  1. I might go with Nicest Pilot Ever rather than Greatest. At least IMO Chuck Yeager was the greatest.

  2. So-called “rich” Americans can only dream of being served a sandwich, fresh fruit, and a dessert with real silverware in economy just about any time of the day, let alone on a 425 miles 1h25m flight (same distance as Boston to Washington) where nowadays not even those shelling for business class get served anything.

The decline of the quality of life in the USA is quite real.
