News and notes from around the interweb:
- One passenger says he wound up in a psychiatric hospital after American Airlines lost his luggage. He says prices in Switzerland were too high to afford to buy warm clothes.
In a recently filed lawsuit, KR claims that exposure to the extreme cold of a Zurich winter without appropriate clothing that had been in his checked luggage led to his mental health deteriorating to the point that he had to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital.
During his time in Switzerland, KR says he was admitted to three psychiatric hospitals, spending a total of more than a month as an inpatient. Without health insurance, KR was landed with a bill by the Swiss healthcare system of more than $50,000.

- Clean your planes.
Crazy how @AmericanAir doesn’t even make the effort to clean anymore. Bobby Pin on the seat with tons of crumbs on both for a 3 hr flight… I’m not asking for immaculate but basic cleaning would be nice. Power outlets don’t work either… Why doesn’t AA address things like this? pic.twitter.com/ncyDh1QPcN

- New American Airlines international coach and premium economy meals and a new domestic coach buy on board: “chicken salad and Boursin cheese wrap, served with coleslaw and a lemon shortbread cookie” $13. This could be pretty decent, we’ll see starting February 1.

After a month in the psychiatric hospitals, KR still isn’t sane. He fled into Zurich during the winter and checks his jacket. He wasn’t sane at departure.
Woah, “a bill by the Swiss healthcare system of more than $50,000.” Feels like the USA! Ok, so, Switzerland doesn’t have universal healthcare, it seems. Like, if you’re gonna go crazy, maybe consider doing so in the EU or UK, instead. Yet another reason to always have travel insurance, regardless. However, if losing your jacket, causes you to go insane, maybe, just maybe, you shouldn’t be traveling.
As for Delta’s seats, please go with reverse-herringbone for the window seats. No one should want to face the aisle.
What’s “KR”‘s VFTW handle?
I guess KR is shorthand for Karen…
I wear a jacket that can be used in the winter on almost all of my flights. It is insane to go to some place like Zurich without a heavy jacket in the wintertime. Pretty much proof of mental problems before leaving. The story leaves out everything about his finances for his trip. He should have had cash and credit cards. Per Google AI, Zurich has a good selection of second-hand and thrift stores for those financially limited.
“But I tried, didn’t I? Goddammit, at least I did that.”
We know what happened to McMurphy in the end….
KR could have just gone home. Or he could have gone to H&M
@1990 – what many (and I guess you as well) don’t understand is that even in countries with “free” (aka covered by taxes) healthcare that is almost always only for citizens and others that have qualified. Very few countries provide free healthcare for visitors. That is why you should always buy a travel insurance policy that includes medical coverage.
I remember I was in Denmark (definitely “free” healthcare) and. Your guide told me she, as someone moving from another country, had applied for a medical card but hadn’t yet received it. She is in much better standing than your average visitor.
Really now, you can afford to fly to a foreign destination and stay for a considerable period, yet you can’t afford to replace a lost jacket?! This does not add up. Especially as you can get a quite warm jacket inexpensively, it will just be bulky.
And, UHC is for residents, not for visitors, although some UHC countries have some degree of reciprocal agreement.
@Retired Gambler — It’s why I always get a basic travel insurance policy for any overseas trips; some years, just went with an annual policy, others à la carte for the term of the trip.
I had a company-based (and excellent) policy that covered health-care internationally. However, you need to check. And, traditional Medicare covers nothing outside the U.S. But, some Medicare plus plans do. So, again, check. I’ve bought an annual policy that provides health coverage and extraction every year for many. It does not cover delay/cancelations, making it cheaper. I may be double covered on some health issues, but if I need to flown home on a medical charter, I’m covered.
Disney removes a beloved benefit, thereby screwing over dedicated fans? Say it ain’t so! They would never do such an incredibly rapacious thing.
I believe the “Disney” policy is just Disneyland. For me the early entry thing is much better in theory than in practice. Last Disneyland visit I stayed at the JW Marriott Anaheim and it was amazing. The hotels at Disney World are way better.
You mean someone is so dumb as to check their winter coat going to a destination that’s super cold in winter time. Low IQ.
FOR GAWDS SAKE! This has to be the stupidest reason to sue anyone/any company I’ve read yet. If the United States would codify a law that “loser pays”, many of these frivolous law suits wouldn’t even be filed. His case is why buying trip insurance is a good idea. One year, for me, is $280.00 and it covers just about anything. Now, admittedly, I am in the airline business so travel isn’t normally an issue. However, my insurance will cover medical evacuation, too. As bad as American Airlines is, they don’t deserve a lawsuit like this.
