Aeroplan Adds South America’s Azul As Mileage Earn and Burn Partner

I was pretty excited last month when Aeroplan added Etihad as an earn and burn partner. Members can redeem Air Canada Aeroplan miles for Etihad flights, and even combine those flights with Star Alliance airline redemptions. And they aren’t adding fuel surcharges to Etihad redemptions.

I’m a little less excited for their latest partner add, but it’s great to see so much life and in the program (just yesterday they put miles on sale cheap, with purchases counting towards elite status spending requirements).

The latest partner addition is Brazil’s Azul, based in São Paulo. The carrier was started by Dave Neeleman, former head of JetBlue. Azul means Blue. Get it? (And like JetBlue they promote live TV.)

Azul serves over 100 destinations. Their long haul Airbus A330s offer business class. From the U.S. you can depart Fort Lauderdale. Their Airbus narrowbodies, Embraer regonal jets, and ATR turboprops are one cabin aircraft.

As with Etihad, redemption prices follow Air Canada’s partner award chart and are combinable with Star Alliance flights. And there re no fuel surcharges. Bookings can be made online.

Earning when you credit Azul flights to Air Canada is as follows:

Eligible Booking Classes Minimum Miles
Class of Service Booking Base Miles Air Canada
Classes & Altitude Members
Class of Service
Bonus*
Business Class J, C, D, I 150% 375 miles
Economy Class Y, B, A, E, F 100% 250 miles
G, H, K, L, M
N, O
Economy Class P, Q 75% 188 miles
Economy Class S, T, U 50% 125 miles
Economy Class X, Z 25% 63 miles

Before the pandemic United wanted a joint venture including Azul which it already partners with, so it’s not surprisng to see them get closer to United’s partner to the North.

  1. Neeleman Azul sucks. Flew Fort Lauderdale to Rio with a stop in Recife in Business.
Paid over a thousand one way. Recife to Rio was one class not Business. Rip off.
Lie flat seats but flight was so turbulent couldn’t sleep. On one dip heard a woman scream. Food not that great. Found out too late that the Biz lounge was before security.
My Brazilian friend said Azul has a bad reputation. Could never get my FF miles.
Won’t fly them again. Gol is a better airline.
