American Airlines Memo Details New Fare Booking Classes to Support Sale of Premium Economy

Last month American Airlines revamped the way they sell tickets online.

Then late last month I wrote that American would be changing the fare class of domestic 2-cabin first class from F to J as part of its move to free up fare buckets to sell the new premium economy cabin.

Here’s detail of their plan: (Click to enlarge.)

So here’s what this means.

  • F was full fare first class. That becomes J on 2-cabin domestic flights. (It’s business class on American’s premium transcon flights.)

  • A was confirmed upgrade space. That becomes D on 2-cabin domestic flights.

  • P was discount first class. That becomes I on 2-cabin domestic flights.

There’s going to be a schedule change and when it runs tickets will be reissued.

  1. one hidden aspect is aligning with BA Avios awards, which used to treat AA domestic F as 3-class F and charge very high mileage.

  2. Gary how do you see the implementation of PE impacting awards? Do you think AA will devalue again or will they slide the cost of PE award flights between Business and Economy with the same award structure we see now?

  3. Does this impact any current “MCE” PE bookings? Also how long do you think elites can book PE for free in economy on 789 flights

  4. Will SWUs clear in D (on a 2-class domestic) or will they be devaluing them further by creating a C class?

  5. Will this effecy AA’s very misleadind first/business class tickets that are advertised on the AA website as first/business class tickets but in reality are coach tickets that let you space available select first/business class seats. But in reality when flights are delayed end up putting you in coach
