American Airlines Will Be The Biggest Airline For The 4th Of July – By A Lot

There are a number of different ways of claiming to be the biggest airline. There’s the most seats departing each day, the most flights and the most seat miles (number of potential passengers over miles flown).

American Airlines has focused its operation on the Sun Belt, and while it flies heavily in the summer to Europe it’s primarily a domestic airline. United Airlines doesn’t have as many flights, and a smaller domestic operation, but its planes circumnavigate the globe. They’re bigger planes, with more seats, producing more seat miles.

Southwest Airlines is entirely domestic and close-in international. They fly only Boeing 737s and don’t have regional airline partners they’ve outsourced flying to.

American Airlines Claims Title Of Biggest For The 4th Of July

To answer ‘who’s the biggest on the Fourth of July’ we’re mostly asking who carries passengers from the most places domestically to the most places domestically, and looking at most flights, even with smaller planes and fewer seats, makes sense. That’s how American Airlines claims to be 30% bigger than Delta for July 4th holiday travel, running June 27 through July 7.

American expects 7.2 million passengers over nearly 70,000 flights for the holidays – up 8% over 2023- and peaking on Sunday, July 7. This will be the biggest day for travel this summer, when American has scheduled 6,534 flights. Over 6,350 flights are scheduled at the front end of the holiday on June 27 and 28 as well.

American Airlines Celebrates the Country;s Founding, Every Day

On April 18, 1775 Paul Revere rode through what;s now Somerville, Medford, and Arlington, Massachusetts to warn that British troops were enroute and that they sought to capture Sam Adams and John Hancock of the regulars’ movements later that night would be the capture of Adams and Hancock.

He never yelled “the British are coming” — the mission was meant to be discrete. And he wasn’t the only rider that night. In fact William Dawes set out first. Malcolm Gladwell theorizes in The Tipping Point that it’s Paul Revere’s social connectedness around Boston that made him the more well-known figure. Alternatively it may have been his first-hand written accounts that led to his immortalization by Longfellow.

The American revolution began that month, but it was July 2, 1776 that the Continental Congress in Philadelphia formally declared independence and two days later that it approved the wording of the Declaration of Independence.

Today you can fly Philadelphia – Boston roundtrip each afternoon on American flight AA1776. Sadly they no longer offer Sam Adams beer on board.

Other Great American Airlines Flight Numbers To Look Out For

American Airlines discovered America with flight 1492.

It’s almost de rigueur to caveat any mention of Columbus with a criticism. Of course saying that Columbus ‘discovered’ America would certainly have seemed odd to the people already living here at the time.

My freshman year of college there was a funeral march on campus to commemorate Columbus Day. One of my friends stood along the march as a counter protester, holding up a sign which simply read “Western Civilization is Good.” Without taking sides in any debate over Columbus, that most American of airlines does of course fly there (and indeed, Columbus was once a hub for America West). So they operate Dallas Fort-Worth – Columbus flight, returning Columbus – Dallas Fort-Worth in mid-afternoon, using flight number AA1492 in both directions.

There are 7 days of the week, 7 seas, and 7 continents. God is said to have rested on the 7th day. There are 7 deadly sins and 7 wonders of the ancient world. If 7 is lucky, then 777 is triply so: on most slot machines 777 is jackpot. So it’s appropriate that American Airlines flight AA777 runs Dallas – Las Vegas and back (it used to be Phoenix – Las Vegas).

I had hoped the American Airlines investment in China Southern would mean more mainland China flying – and a re-assignment of 888 (currently Boston – Charlotte) in celebration of the luck that venture would bring. Alas it hasn’t worked out as well as hoped.

Fancy some recreational pot? American flight 420 takes you from Dallas to Denver and back each day. Sadly, it does not appear that American has operated a flight assigned 666 in nine years.

  1. AA is running additional late night banks at its hubs. Great, more opportunity to screw things up.

You’d think they have better things to do than push pickle against the other airlines.

  2. Well looks like the Delta cheerleader will talk about RSM’s and what not but DL is small peanuts. AA is the biggest most premium carrier in the US, including their lounges at T8 which make that new expensive Delta One look miserable. Low quality drinks and charging for what they serve for AA. DL is playing catchup and we all know once they have to replace their 757 and 767 they will have to take out some serious debt lowering them back as everything is cyclical. AA is clearly the US Flag Carrier and the number one airline for the best holiday of the year.

  3. Did they pay their Flight Attendants yet? Until then I foresee a breakdown in operations at every turn.

  4. Ah the sunbelt! The spirit of Vasu Raja lives on just as the forefathers at American envisioned long ago. “The network is the product!”

  5. Primarily a domestic airline? 120+ widebodies with dozens more on the way. Flights to Doha, Shanghai, Rio, Milan, Sydney. They have flights running all over the world with a massive operation in London and Latin and South America. US domestic maybe the heart, but it’s not the full body. They are certainly not a “domestic” airline.

  6. 100% misleading. Revenue is the metric used to compare companies: the biggest company in the world is Walmart, the biggest oil producer in the world is Aramco, etc.

And the biggest airline in the world is, well, I had to look this up, Delta Air Lines.

Every other measure else is misleading unless it’s described (e.g. the largest company in terms of locations is not Walmart but McDonald’s, etc.)
