American Has Firmed Orders For 30 New 737 MAXs, Delayed Delivery Of 787-9s

American Airlines is getting more Boeing 737 MAX jets. They’ve converted purchase options on 23 MAX 8 aircraft into firm orders, and “intends to convert a further seven of its purchase options in 2022, bringing its firm order of additional 737 MAX 8 aircraft to 30” and:

  • 15 of the 30 will arrive in 2023
  • 15 of the 30 will arrive in 2024

The MAX has returned to the skies

I wrote over a week ago that Boeing 787-9 deliveries would be delayed due to a change in the aircraft that allows for greater maximum takeoff weight. Jon NYC has been alluding to issues related to this for months.

It’s these 787-9s that I am really looking forward to in order to see launch of more long haul routes, and also to see what American has in store for its next business class product.

  1. I don’t care what anyone says, I am not flying on this aircraft. ANd this is enough stupidity that I am seriously considering selling off what little shares of stock I have. I know I was stupid too. They were stupid to retire all those great Mad Dogs. Bring them back. ANd bring Crandall out of retirement. Bring this airline BACK to what it was.

  2. Glad I’m not the only one who feels this way about the Max. I’m having to rely too much on geeks not pilots.

  3. AA needs to replace and retire the old USAir A320s and the Max is a solid plane now and is about the best tested aircraft in the skys. Boeing is righting the ship and many involved are retiring or being retired so the company can move on.

Saying your not going to fly this plane is going to make traveling in the US very hard, AA, UA, LUV all have large numbers of MAX about to build their fleet. DL will eventually need the -8 to replace their 800s and old A320s. So either get ready to walk, ride the bus or train because you options are becoming limited.

  4. I like what Alan said thank you very much, and in spite of what sunviking says, I will do my best to avoid the max but if I have to will take comfort in knowing my captain is sane, my flight crew is intelligent and no one wants to die…but I’d still rather fly the MD 80 or a 767

  5. Does anyone know a timeline for AA’s 22 existing 789’s for the software mod, or will it be exclusive to the new ones?

  6. Great, more Jurassic Jets (aka Satan’s Chariot). This is the most miserable aircraft in the fleet.
