Briggs & Riley is one of the better luggage brands, I have two of their bags. They have a lifetime warranty, and stand behind it the way that Tumi used to years ago.

I wouldn’t pay over $500 for a checked bag, I don’t check bags often enough to get much use out of it. Although I currently expect to check bags three times this year which is more than normal. I’ve found that expensive luggage can actually be worth it, at least for my carry on, with as often as I use it. I’ve definitely graduated from the $50 Staples bags.

I’ve also been converted to four wheel bags, I used to be a purist but they’re so much easier to cruise through the airport — doubly so for a checked bag that’s heavy. At $339 this hard sided bag is a steal.

  4. Ben (not Lucky) – All polycarbonate bags will get scratched, especially if you check them. I’ve used the Torq series and like them, but they do show scuffs and scratches even more than other polycarbonate bags I’ve used (Tumi and Rimowa). In my experience among polycarbonate bags Rimowas show scuffs and scratches the least – their signature grooves seem to both protect the surface better and hides the scuffs somewhat.

  5. How do those spinner wheels hold up with the abuse they take as checked baggage? Since 2000 I’ve only owned the two wheeled soft side luggage and never had a problem except for WN breaking off the side handles on my TravelPro bags.

    Also what are the upsides to polycarbonate v. ballistic nylon? It seems the former may weigh less and probably do better in inclement weather. But the latter are zipper-expandable which is nice when you buy something on your trip.
