One Of The World’s Top Models Was Named After An Inflight Magazine

A woman once gave birth on a flight and named the child for the airline. In the film Where the Heart Is, Natalie Portman gives birth to a baby inside a Walmart and the President of Walmart gave her $500 and a job.

I’ve never heard of a celebrity named after an airline’s inflight magazine, though. But that’s the story of former U.K. Model Of The Year, actress, and singer Cara Delevingne, according to her dad.

The 29 year old has been listed among the world’s highest paid models and as one of the British “makers of the 21st century” but, apparently, had a connection with Irish carrier Aer Lingus that was severed by the pandemic. As her father explains,

“I remember I used to go backwards and forwards to Dublin a lot, and the name of the Aer Lingus magazine was Cara. I loved the name,” he told the Irish Times. “I’m here to celebrate 100 years of Anglo-Irish friendship. Long may it continue.”

Aer Lingus, owned by British Airways parent company IAG, discontinued its inflight magazine during the pandemic (as did some other airlines, including American Airlines and indeed Delta was first to do this).

According to Aer Lingus, “We were delighted to learn that our popular inflight magazine was the inspiration behind Cara Delevingne’s name,” yet they aren’t delighted enough to bring back the inflight magazine.

If American Way were still around, that could foretell a child’s future as a superhero rather than a modeling career. Perhaps Hemispheres means a role in the sciences?

Update: how did I forget that this is the same supermodel who had sex with her girlfriend on a flight, and complained to a flight attendant that other passengers were watching.

“I’ve had sex in planes a lot,” Cara boasted. “But I’ve always been caught. It’s super-hard not to get caught.”

…“I had sex in the chair on the plane and there was a guy watching. We ended up telling the air stewardess what was happening,” she recalled. “Like, ‘This guy keeps staring at us. Can you tell him to stop?’”

  1. Is that the woman who complained about someone watching her while she had sex in her seat on a flight? Perhaps I’m thinking of someone else.
