Report: American Airlines About to Announce Another Aircraft Order

Last month American placed an order for 47 Boeing 787s.

A couple of months ago they revealed to employees they were looking to buy used Airbus A319s though apparently a rumored deal to pick some up from Frontier fell through.

However the world’s largest airline appears not to be done shopping. They are reportedly near a deal for 15 Bombardier CRJ-900s. These would add to American’s already substantial fleet of CR9s.

  • Currently PSA operates 53 of these planes delivered between 2014 and 2016, configured with 76 seats including 12 first class seats.

  • Mesa operates 64 of them, all but 7 delivered between 2003 and 2011. Some have 76 seats and some – with just 9 first class seats – have 79. Many of these were purchased used, and a handful may still even have US Airways paint jobs.

Despite a move towards fleet commonality, American also operates 76 seat Embraer ERJ-175s as well.

The sale could be announced as soon as Thursday, although the deal could still fall apart. The list price for these planes would be about $700 million so a good rough guess is that American would be paying half that.

  1. there’s a nationwide shortage of pilots, especially at regionals, and their solution is flooding the marketplace with *more* 70-seaters ?? jeeeez

  2. @henry… it’s still less expensive finding a pilot that can fly a 70-seater vs. a 120-seater.

  3. So what, exactly, is AA’s strategy? They seem so knee-jerk with all the crap that’s going on internally. No one’s happy so let’s throw them some raises. Now they’re complaining about planes, let’s order new ones with dense configs. Now they’re unhappy about the planes we just bought, let’s get new ones in standard configs.

    AA is a wreck

  4. I do not like this order at all – if you want more 76 seaters why are you ordering CR9s? Order more E175s.

Ideally, AA should only have two types of regional aircraft:

    50 seaters – E145s
    76 seaters – E175s

  5. Golfing Boy….. start Your Own Airline. I think AA has a better handle on How to Run a Fn Airline better than some two bit Golfer that knows Jack shit. jeesuz!

  6. Dumb! Order some of the new CS100/200. Stop with commuter jet crap. Passengers hate them!

  7. “I sure wish we could have even more flights on bouncy regional jets with tiny overhead bins” Said no one ever.
