- A Delta flight from Beijing to Seattle had to divert to Eareckson Air Station on Monday due to an engine issue. The former Shemya Air Force Base is on Shemya, Alaska in the Aleutians. A Cathay Pacific flight diverted in 2015 and China Eastern in 1993. It hasn’t served as an Air Force base in 24 years. Delta flew a replacement aircraft and crew out to continue the journey on to Seattle, along with mechanics to work on the stranded plane.
Shemya Island North Shore, credit: United States Fish and Wildlife Service - United Airlines passengers voted for transatlantic flight to depart despite limited lavatory functionality. If United Airlines were a democracy I doubt this is all passengers would vote for.
