Breaking: Delta Flight Manages Successful Landing In Charlotte Without Nose Gear

Delta Air Lines flight 1092 from Atlanta to Charlotte just successfully landed without its nose gear. Passengers safely deplaned the aircraft and made it to the terminal by bus.

After circling the airport a couple of times, trying to address the malfunctioning landing gear, the plane made it down onto runway 36 at around 8:40 a.m. The runway is currently closed.

Prior to the pandemic, American Airlines was growing its Charlotte hub to 700 flights. They got new gates and were doubling down on their Southeastern hub, with its low costs and access to Sun destinations. Charlotte was still second to Dallas – Fort Worth, where they were growing to 900 flights.

American’s future in Charlotte may be about to get even bigger, since the airport has started work on a new 10,000 foot, $1.6 billion runway west of the terminal.

And I’m told by employees on the ground there that at least some managers are enforcing 20 minute door closes when no more passengers are boarding (even if checked-in passengers haven’t yet boarded).

American – which has been somewhat cagey about the work that’s happening – says the updates which will take several months are about bringing the space up to fire code.
