You are legally entitled to a refund of TSA security fees and customs and immigration inspection fees on unused nonrefundable tickets on request. When you don’t ask, airlines keep that money.

Class Action Lawsuit Says American Airlines Pension Pursues Political Agenda, Not Investment Returns
A senior American Airlines pilot has filed a class action lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas over the 100,000 member, $26 billion airline pension, arguing that it is pursuing “leftist political agendas” by making investments that follow ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) guidelines.
He argues that the plan breaches its fiduciary duty by privileging activism on issues including race, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmentalism over financial returns.
Maybe Wait To Sue Southwest For Failing To Issue Refunds Until They Actually Fail To Issue Refunds?
I’m all for suing airlines. I suggested it as the best way to get a refund from Air Canada. I have argued for years that common law contract claims against the airlines need to be permitted. I just figure we ought to give airlines an opportunity to actually do the thing you’re suing over before actually filing suit.
Southwest Airlines Sued For Denying Early Bird Check-in Then Refusing Refunds
A customer paid for ‘Early Bird Check-in’ in order to board earlier – their flight was cancelled and they were rebooked on another flight, they didn’t receive the earlier boarding they paid for (they had to buy it again!) or a refund of their early check-in fee.
Naturally Southwest Airlines argues the case can’t be pursued because it’s pre-empted by the Airline Deregulation Act. They lost.
Here’s What Happened To The Class Action Refund Lawsuit Against American Airlines
Several lawsuits were filed over airlines’ resistance to providing customers with refunds when either cancelling or substantially changing itineraries early in the Covid-19 pandemic, as required by U.S. law. A class action lawsuit against American Airlines has been resolved in a draw.
In my experience American Airlines was one of the few ‘good guys’ with refunds. The places to focus on are the airlines and online travel agencies which really did act badly against their customers – like United, JetBlue, Air Canada, and online travel agency sites.

Does A New British Airways Frequent Flyer Program Rule Violate 14 CFR § 253.10?
Yesterday British Airways announced a change to its frequent flyer program purporting to preclude members from taking it to court or participating in any class action lawsuit.
However that would seem to run directly contrary to the express provisions of 14 CFR § 253.10. In other words, it appears that British Airways may be breaking the law.
British Airways Sneaks A Change To Its Frequent Flyer Program That May Backfire
British Airways notified members of a change to its frequent flyer terms and conditions to limit the ability to sue.
Mandatory arbitration, though, is so 2018 and may wind up costing British Airways a lot more than lawsuits would have.
Nationwide Class Action Filed Against TSA & DEA For Seizing Travelers’ Cash At Airports
Terry Rolin is 79 years old. He grew up skeptical of banks, and kept his life savings of $82,373 squirreled away in his house. His daughter came to visit from Boston and help him downsize into an apartment. They agreed she would set up a joint bank account for him.
Banks were closed for the day. Her flight departing Pittsburgh was early the next morning. So she had to take the cash with her. The cash was spotted at security and seized. No crime was ever charged, but the government decided to keep the money anyway. This is surprisingly common at airports across the country.
Class Action Filed Against Marriott Over Resort Fees
The lead plaintiff has stayed at over 45 Marriott properties and contends resort fees are ‘drip pricing’. He claims not to have realized resort fees applied for some of his stays when he made his booking, because those fees are obscured (under “taxes and fees”).
What we can hope to gain from this and the state investigations of resort fees is a change in industry practice where mandatory charges are included in the room rate so that consumers can compare pricing.
