$600K Scam Uncovered: Korean Air Executive Exploits Lax Oversight for Years

Korean Air underpaid the Guam Airport over $600,000 in passenger facilities charges, because they underreported the number of passengers on their flights for years. As soon as the airport caught it in an audit, the airline paid up – and started asking questions.

Their former station manager will now serve 41 months in federal prison, plus five years of supervised release, for bank fraud and money laundering and will have to pay restitution to the airline.

$580 for 129 Miles? Politicians Rail Over United Airlines Monopoly And High Fares In U.S. Territories

If Jimmy McMillan had been a resident of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, he might have declared the airfares are too damned high!. Politicians in Guam and Saipan have figured out that you never lose by taking on the cost of air travel. And, they complain, that “[a] roundtrip ticket from Saipan to Guam can cost up to $580 on United Airlines. That’s more expensive than some tickets from the Marianas to destinations in Asia.”

Back To The Future Blunder: United’s Special Flight 200 Lands In The Wrong Year

On Friday I wrote about the five flights that take off one day, and arrive at their destination the previous day thanks to the international date line.

The first, Guam – Honolulu on United, actually would have allowed you to celebrate New Years Eve twice, in two different cities. Go out on December 31st in Guam, then catch an early New Years Day flight to Honolulu – arriving in Hawaii early enough on New Years Eve there to party again.
