Reader Aaron shares receipts from a recent trip through American Airlines terminal 8 at New York JFK, where concessions giant HMS Host is finding new creative ways to separate you from your money. They’re stacking on fees and inflated suggested tips – and, it appears, pocketing some of the money for themselves.

Review: Hyatt Regency JFK At Resorts World
Overall the property – from Globalist recognition, to details in the room, to the club lounge – exceeded my expectations.
The Hyatt Regency JFK at Resorts World will be my new go-to for New York JFK airport overnights, and the cost of a roundtrip Uber will be worth it for the speed and convenience compared schlepping over to the shuttle pickup and then waiting for a hotel shuttle.
US Customs and Border Protection Will No Longer Require Mandatory ID Checks Getting Off Domestic Flights
On February 22, 2017 Delta flight DL1583 arrived at New York JFK from San Francisco and passengers were greeted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection demanding to see ID from everyone getting off the aircraft. Apparently they were looking for an individual who had been ordered to be deported.
Except that US CBP has no authority to do that.

Fare Alert: Summer and Holiday Business Class to Europe From $1835 Roundtrip
American Airlines is running all of its Europe and deep South America flights from New York JFK with Boeing 777s. That’s too much capacity even for a joint venture partner’s hub like Madrid (Iberia). They really ought to be basing some smaller aircraft, like Boeing 787s, out of New York and serving more destinations profitably.
During peak summer months and during fall and winter holidays there’s often fare compression, business class tickets go down in price (especially for restricted fares that leisure flyers can buy) while coach gets more expensive. We’re certainly seeing that on American’s New York JFK – Madrid route, where they’re discounting business class. For about the same money you can also fly their partner Iberia’s business class non-stop as well.

TSA: ‘Grow Your Hair or Buy Bigger Boobs If You Want to Clear Security Again’
Travel is generally at the forefront of toleration. United, for instance, was first to offer ‘undisclosed’ and ‘unspecified’ gender options when booking a ticket. Air Italy, 49% owned by Qatar Airways, was first in Europe to let customers define gender themselves.
That seems to be the trend everywhere except the TSA where they still apparently expect passengers to conform to whatever gender stereotype matches the preferences of their screeners on any given day. You don’t have to be non-binary to run into problems, if you simply don’t appear masculine or feminine enough.
Rumor: American Buying Airbus 321XLR Aircraft for Europe Flights
There’s speculation that American Airlines could announce an order for Airbus A321XLRs at the Paris Air Show, which runs later this month June 17-23. The idea would be to replace Boeing 757s, to allow flights to smaller European cities from New York and Philadelphia.
The narrowbody aircraft could even be outfitted with lie flat direct aisle access business class seats.
Eastern Airlines Comeback Continues, Wants to Start Scheduled International Service From New York JFK
It’s been nearly 30 years since the ‘real’ Eastern flew, and it didn’t have a good reputation even then — for reliability, for service, or even for safety.
So what is next for Eastern Airlines? They have applied to the Department of Transportation to start scheduled international air service from New York JFK>
American Explains How Their Winning Move at New York JFK is Not to Play
At an employee question and answer session with American Airlines leadership this past week American’s Vice President – Planning, Vasu Raja, talked about my post about the airline’s service cuts at New York JFK. He defends focusing on flying to hubs, a limited number of international destinations, and smaller cities where they have a strong customer base.
American has withdrawn from being a player in the New York market, with each retrenchment helping to accelerate the next retrenchment. American can no longer compete for the wallet share of business customers, and is only able to pick up business on a limited set of routes. As a result customers can’t remain loyal to the carrier and pay a revenue premium to go out of their way to do so, but choose it when they represent the best choice (with their limited schedule or based on price) on a one-off basis.
