Wide Open: Use Miles To Fly Singapore Airlines Business Class To Europe

Singapore Airlines saver award space is wide open for those who want to travel business class between the U.S. and Europe. It’s available starting August and running all the way through end of schedule in June 2023. And it’s available on both transatlantic routes that Singapore Airlines flies. This award space was first spotted by Thrifty Traveler‘s premium airfare deal alert service.

  • New York JFK – Frankfurt
  • Houston – Manchester, U.K.

Here’s a sample of the New York – Frankfurt route for 2 business class saver awards in April, 2023:

The New York JFK – Frankfurt flight is operated by an Airbus A380 featuring the airline’s latest business class. Meanwhile Houston – Manchester is operated using an Airbus A350.

Flights cost 72,000 miles each way per person. The KrisFlyer program doesn’t add fuel surcharges to Singapore Airlines awards.

Points transfer from American Express, Capital One, Chase and Citibank – Amex and Capital One points transfer faster, though all usually within 24 hours.

It’s an award availability desert out there right now, but Singapore Airlines availability – a nice business class, two routes, available most of the time – has you covered. And since points from all of the big bank transferable programs move into Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, many readers will be able to book these seats.

Note of course that you do need to use Singapore’s own miles to book long haul premium cabin travel. They do not intentionally make this award space available to partner airlines like United MileagePlus or Avianca LifeMiles.

  1. Singapore Air still requires masks. I’m finding a pattern here: open premium award availability is almost exclusively on airlines with mask requirements. Those that have dropped it have the least availability and/or the highest point redemptions.

  2. @ Wes, recently flew Singapore from BNE to SIN to JNB in business. Yes, they “have” mask requirements but mostly ignored. We had great flights. No worries.

  3. “They do not intentionally make this award space available to partner airlines like United MileagePlus or Avianca LifeMiles.”
Not sure what you are meaning to say here. Their award space IS available to their partner airlines, but they didn’t intend that to be the case? But that IS the case, right? Slightly confused.

  4. @ Wes

Hmmmm…Qantas favors masks – try finding premium award space across the Pacific or their major international routes…your pattern recognition program is inoperative, or more likely been overpowered by your uncritical prejudice.

“Note of course that you do need to use Singapore’s own miles to book long haul premium cabin travel.’

Not seeing award space through either Virgin Australia Velocity or United on the dates, which I checked out. On some routes which I’m been checking recently United is now showing better access to SQ than Avianca.

That said, seems that there’s good award space on Swiss to JFK using Star Alliance partner points at the moment.

  6. Saw a September date JFK-FRA SQ J going for $1,550 one-way. Not too bad actually for a cash price.

  7. Too bad it requires a stop at JFK and probably a positioning flight in economy for those of us who live on the West Coast. Nonstarter.

  8. I explored it a bit and while I could find MAN-IAH that fits my needs, I couldn’t add anything neither at the front nor at the back.

Positioning to MAN isn’t easy nor cheap for a family exploring London. Getting from IAH to the final destination seems to require a separate ticket too.

  9. Are you aware that since at least March 2022 (or earlier), Singapore Airlines will NOT let you redeem Krisflyer Miles to book a flight online (i.e.: JFK-FRA in business)?
Tried numerous times, with different browsers, cleared cookies, etc., etc., to no avail.
They tell you to call them to redeem, then after waiting an hour on the phone, they tell you their redeem team will call you back, so you can redeem over the phone – guess what? they NEVER called back yet, since March, and I called them many a times.
We’ve sent over a dozen emails since March, and one month ago, we received a reply, with the answer “sorry, but send us detailed info” (as if we didn’t originally write 2 pages of info to them already, to begin with)!
BUT if you want to use cash & miles (at a miserable rate, to book), or just cash, then yes, you can do it online instantly.
They just want your cash and make it impossible to redeem online (saver & advantage)!
Has anyone looked at the zillion complaints against them on their Facebook page???
    This airline is a joke.
Why are they still flying it’s beyond me (supposedly great service in the sky, but horrible to non-existent on the ground)!!!
    Avoid at all costs!!!

  10. George M, that’s very strange. I redeemed KrisFlyer miles on their site last week (SIN-EWR) using plain old desktop Chrome.

    Seth

  11. George M, you are wrong. I literally just booked these flights (FRA-JFK) from an instant Amex MR transfer and had zero issues.

  12. @Alex – don’t look to fly MAN – London (or vice versa). Take the train. It leaves from MAN airport and drops you off Central London. Not so cheap (sometimes flights are cheaper) but much less hassle.

  13. To Seth & Mark P
How is this possible?? I’ve tried 3 bowsers, and their mobile app, before posting above!
Miles & cash (which I’d never use), and cash, works perfect, but redeeming just miles, it does not – tells me I have to call them, and then you know what happens when you call, as I mentioned earlier.
    What’s going on??
    Thank you, gentlemen!

    Meaning?
    Nothing was said by them.
We live in NYC, and fly out of JFK.
Possibly due to high summer traffic here, they won’t let you redeem online yet?
But cash and cash&miles works perfect for me online!
    Thank you, Omar!
