Reminder: Live Chat Tomorrow Night with the Head of Southwest Rapid Rewards

As noted last month, Jonathan Clarkson, Director of the Rapid Rewards program, will talk live online with frequent flyers at 9pm Eastern.

Here’s the event page. You can also pre-submit a question if you’d like. Here’s an idea of some of the questions that folks are asking. Here’s the question I blogged last week.

I have to give Clarkson a lot of credit coming out and speaking with members online. There’s been much handwringing about the program, and certainly most engaged frequent flyers think that recent changes are anything but positive. It’s not just the fact that drink coupon expirations are now enforced. Instead, it’s all about their new fare-based rather than segment-based frequent flyer program.

Me, I think it all goes back to their change in 2007 deciding that they could change the terms and conditions of the program with just 30 days notice, rather than the previously required six months. Or it could date back to the introduction of capacity controls on awards in 2005. Before then, those were the golden days…

You’ll definitely want to tune in, even ask a question or two, and see first-hand the answers.

  1. Why bother, unless essential travel needs and locations restrict you to traveling Southwest?

This program joins B6 TrueBlue and VX Elevate to form a triumvirate of the most boring FF programs in America.

  2. There is one very valuable perk in RR 2.0 not offered by other programs: Everyone can book award travel, then cancel it and redeposit the points with no fee (only top tier elites get this benefit with other programs). Even though I’m close to 1 million miles with UA, I often book WN if there’s much chance I’ll need to cancel a booking for myself or a travelling companion.
