News and notes from around the interweb:
- More Saudi women trying to escape oppression in their country have been interdicted at their connecting airport, this time Hong Kong (HT: Leonard B.) In January a Saudi teen was intercepted by Saudi authorities while connecting in the Bangkok airport but international attention for her case made it possible for her to make it out.
- A history of Singapore in 10 dishes (HT: Marginal Revolution) Seems incomplete without a discussion of char kway teow given the role it played providing high calorie diets to workers building the city.
- This rule is relevant to current US presidential primary campaign.
42 USC §271(a) & 21 CFR §1250.44(b) make it a federal crime to provide combs for the common use of passengers on an interstate flight.

- This passenger should just fly American, where seat back screens on 737s will be ripped out.
I assume this person did not know how to turn off the screen. pic.twitter.com/FBEqGQTdYb

- The Marriott ‘Bonvoy’ Oscars commercial.
21 CFR §1250 is for sanitary things from a simpler time.
For example, no sharing cups, towels or combs. This isn’t surprising, and is part of the reason why there’s so much waste on a plane. There aren’t facilities for cleaning glasses, so you get single use ones unless it’s for a limited number of passengers, such as in the pointy end of the plane.
It’s also the same part of CFR that prevents you from intentionally dumping trash or toilets from the air.
That tiger shrimp looks delicious! 🙂
Please turn Bonvoy into a verb. For example, if your passport gets stolen you could say it got bonvoyed. Or your hotel reservation spontaneously disappears- must have been bonvoyed. Mysterious hold charges for an award booking appear on your credit card? Bonvoyed. When you’re trying to finally finish something you’ve been working on for 3 or years, but there just seems to be all this noise around the edges… bonvoyed.
Bonvoy commercial just reminds me of this “bing” story from Microsoft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GM4Lt5k24s
Not sure if Marriott laid of anyone for not saying “Bonvoy” in an excited way. What on earth is a bonvoy anyway? Guess some French teacher turned in his grave right after they aired that bonvoy commercial.
