American is selling directly its New York JFK – Barcelona flight for $376 roundtrip:
This is actually a $45 base fare in each direction plus taxes and surcharges.
The fare is available with minimum 28 day advance purchase for outbound travel by April 6 or again starting October 30. There’s a 7 day minimum stay and $300 change fee.
You can actually book this even cheaper, found using airfare metasearch site Momondo, here it’s $345 total roundtrip for the same flights booked as Finnair codeshares:
Of course if you have designs on upgrades (such as with an American Airlines Systemwide Upgrade given to Executive Platinum members and on each million mile threshold starting at 2 million) you’re definitely going to prefer the American Airlines ‘prime’ flight.
However crediting a $45 each way base fare plus $200 in fuel surcharges to American AAdvantage earns only $290 elite qualifying dollars and a non-elite member earns just 1450 miles roundtrip for 7663 miles of flying. So consider crediting American flights to Etihad or Cathay Pacific where one mile still equals one mile.

Would love similar fare or close to it from LAX if you ever see it! Especially on American.
Can I credit to SQ if I want to use a swu?
@estnet how would you credit to SQ? sq is star alliance and AA is oneworld. They’re not partners
@estnet you can’t credit an American Airlines flight to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer as they are not partners. American also technically has a rarely-enforced rule that requires you to credit to AAdvantage if you benefit from the AAdvantage program for upgrades or other privileges.
whoops, wishful thinking – I meant Cathay but my brain skipped – sorry. Gary your answer is helpful but do you know how the rule you cite is enforced?
1 I ask to put a swu request – once it clears I change to Cathay for credit (can I do this – even if ug clears at the gate could i change the number online?)
2 swu doesn’t clear – then it doesn’t matter if I change (also can this be done online eg at the gate once it’s clear the ug hasn’t happened>)
