Book Your Award to Europe One Way, Buy Business Class Back for Just $709

It doesn’t make sense to redeem miles for business class when it would cost you perhaps 55,000 miles plus taxes and in some cases fuel surcharges when you can just outright buy a business class ticket for a little over $700.

Right now Star Alliance member TAP Air Portugal is offering business class from Copenhagen to Miami, New York or Boston via Lisbon from $709, and originating in Stockholm for about $185 more.

These deals are available all year, depending where you want to go. The deals to Miami are available all year in 2018. The deals to New York or Boston kick in- in August 2018 and are good even during peak holiday travel.

Key details of fare basis JDKEXI0D:

  • One free stopover in Lisbon
  • $115 Euro fee to refund
  • $140 Euro change fee (220 Euro for no show)

You’re flying 4700 – 5600 miles, and TAP Air Portugal J fares earn 200% of flown miles in several Star Alliance frequent flyer programs.

TAP offers pre-order meals in long haul business class departing Lisbon.

Not all of TAPs Airbus A330s offer fully flat business class, though I believe Boston and New York JFK usually do get flat seats. However for a day flight from Europe to the US I don’t mind angled business, I’m generally not sleeping, I just want the more spacious seat for the long flight.

  1. Decent value, but remember that TAP is one of the worst airlines in Europe and probably the worst full service airline in the west.

  2. We did this last year when they were offering a similar deal coming home from Europe. Used AmEx points to buy the tickets, and at ~50k MR points to get miles-earning tickets, it is a no brainer. It is worth noting, as you and others have, that TAP, especially on the Miami route, is a 1995 business-class with mediocre food and service. But again, for a day flight that earns miles it is a good value.

  3. If you don’t mind angled-flat why not fly Norwegian premium then? About the same price without the stops and inconvenient cities.

  4. TAP is refurbishing their long haul A330 fleet and this price still represents a very good value for some.

It is also available CPH-YYZ for the same price on the new A330-300 series.

  5. @Ryan —> When was the last time you flew TAP? Granted, TAP used to stand for “Take Another Plane,” but they’ve certainly shown improvement of late . . . it’s not VS, or AF to be sure, but it *is* getting better.

  6. For the same price Parker has offered to put me in basic economy and provide extra paper towels in the lav. Why would I fly TAP?

  7. I’m trying to book this for Feb 19 and getting business class fare of 1300-1600 euros–nowhere near the price quoted here. What am I missing?
