Airlines will frequently give you elite status if you have status with a competitor in order to make it easier to move your business.
Alaska Airlines in particular is quite aggressive, they will even match to their top tier MVP Gold 75K level when you email elite.flyer@alaskaair.com with proof of your existing status. And they’re fairly quick on the response, too. Wait until October 1 if you want status to be valid for the entire coming year and not just through the end of the current elite year.
They also have a new offer out that does not require you to be a current elite flyer, just someone that has plans to fly cross country a few times.

we can all see where their looking to poach travelers, actually the new interiors and service are really nice. I equate their coach to Southwest in comfort , AS premium class has I believe the most room of anyone flying cross country, first as well. I am talking about the new interiors
@ Gary — I don’t totally understand why this doesn’t apply to residents of more states, like GA and SC. We have coastline, too!
I was gifted MVP status last year (now expired). The bonus miles are a plus, as was my 3 upgrades to first SAN/SFO and R/T JFK/LAS.
Such a deal!
Alaska needs a geography lesson. States like N.H. And R.I. feed a fair amount of traffic to Bos.
@Gene – or Hawaii. Nothing but coastline…
I’m waiting for their next double miles promotion on partner airlines.
Is this promotion called “Fly to Hot Spots become Elite”
So should you live ,survive and don’t get too sick your elite!
How reassuring
