American Airlines Will Start Rotating Snack Baskets Much More Often Starting October 9

American Airlines flights receive snack baskets up front when they’re less than 700 miles (under 900 miles on regional jets), and as a second service on longer domestic flights and on late night departures.

  • Mainline departures between 5 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. for flights 176 – 699 miles
  • Regional carrier departures between 5 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. for flights 176 – 899 miles
  • Second service on domestic flights 2200 miles and longer
  • Eastbound flights departing after 8 p.m.

Currently American Airlines changes up their domestic first class snack baskets every six months. I don’t love most of what they offer, and boy the contents get boring after awhile. The last changeover was April 10.

While I don’t think the new choices starting October 9 are better the good news is that the airline will begin rotating out contents every two months beginning with this next refresh.

Here’s the new A.M. Snack Basket:

Item Quantity New/Old
Seneca Apple Chips 4 New
Sahale Maple Pecan Nuts 4 New
Stellar Snacks Mixed Nuts 5 New
Cooper Street Granola Bar 5 New
Kitchun-Holy Coco 4 Old
180 Rice Pops 5 Old

This is a soft cutover so you won’t see all of the new items at once. American isn’t going to just toss their existing stock of snack items. Instead as they run out of each item, they’ll replace it as follows:

Here’s the new P.M. snack basket items:

Item Quantity New/Old
Hippeas White Cheddar 4 New
Grace’s Best Sunflower Seed Cookies 4 New
Stellar Snacks Mixed Nuts 5 New
Uglies Potato chips 5 New
Blue Diamond Nut Thins 3 Old
Brownie Brittle Chocolate Chip 4 Old
Love Corn Sea Salt 4 Old

And here’s how they’ll transition existing items over to the new PM snack basket:

There’ll be no more fake stroopwafels, and chocolate chip cookies become sunflower seed cookies. They aren’t JetBlue’s Terra Chips, or Cheddar Cheese Ritz Minis (Southwest). Hopefully we’ll see something delicious with the December update!

  1. Last time I flew the FA rotated the snack basket so I could get a look at all of the snacks. I think rotating it once is enough.
