Analysis of Singapore’s December 1 Award Chart Changes

The Global Traveller offers his analysis of the changes in the Singapore Airlines Krisflyer award chart that I recently mentioned.

He reiterates my point about the value in 50% mileage cost for one-way awards. That’s a big improvement.

The reduction in the number of zones on the award chart means some awards become more expensive. The Delta chart has more zones, however, and generally higher prices for premium cabin awards.

The nice benefit for Virgin awards is that multiple flights can be combined for a through ticket, Kiwi gives the example of North America to Africa which used to require two awards but can now be done as one. At the same time, however, award prices go up.

Meanwhile, Air India awards don’t change.

Thanks for the recap, Kiwi Flyer!

  1. As one of your blog follower, allow me to add some clarifications & observations to your entry:

    1. While there is no change in redeeming KrisFlyer miles on SIA operated flights, we see adjustments on partner airlines flights.
    2. One Way Awards are available on SIA operated flights as long as my memory holds.
    3. One Way Awards are still not available on these *A airlines: Air Canada, Continental Airlines, Croatia Airlines, LOT, SAS, Shanghai Airlines and TAP. No One Way Awards on Non *A partner airlines Delta & Virgin Atlantic.
    4. If someone likes to redeem One Way Awards, for value reasons I recommend Diamond Club.
    5. Round Trip Companion Awards on Virgin Atlant look appealing.

  2. SQ introduced one-way awards several years ago at 70% of a roundtrip. This makes the price 50% and extends the offer to partners. That’s an improvement which on net ifs a positive for me.

  3. 1. KrisFlyer (KF) is the FFP of Singapore Airlines (SQ).
    2. KF have three different award charts: SQ and SilkAir Award Charts, Star Alliance Awards and Other Airlines’ Award Charts (http://tinyurl.com/yguaxzy)
    3. KF anounced changes to redemption of KF miles for flights on partner airlines from 12/01/09: “You will enjoy greater flexibility and more travel options when you redeem your KF miles for one-way award tickets on selected *A partners and Mexicana.”
    4. As KF did not announce any change to their SQ and SilkAir Award Charts theirs is neither an approvement nor disapprovement in redeeming KF miles on SQ and Silkair operated flights.
    5. Please have a look at SQ and SilkAir Award One Way Award Chart, effective 9/28/08 (http://tinyurl.com/yjqtesn)
    6. Please scrol down at read at General Notes : A round-trip award ticket requires twice the number of KrisFlyer miles shown on
    this award chart.
