Hawaii Fare War: United Drops Dallas, Newark, and Miami – Honolulu to ~ $450.. American Matches

Flying United to Hawaii from American’s hubs in Dallas or Miami is running about $420 all-in. Flying from Newark is $465. You can start in Miami and route via Newark for less money and more miles.

Looking at the fare rules for Miami – Honolulu, GE73FS, I see:

  • Travel must begin by November 14, 7 day advance purchase required, 60 day maximum stay.

  • If you depart Sunday through Wednesday, then return has to be at least 3 days after departure. If you depart Thursday or Friday, then you can come back as early as Saturday. For Saturday departures you can come back as early as Sunday.

  • You can stopover at a United hub once in each direction for an extra $55.81

Availability is pretty good, too. For Miami departures in October, here’s a fare calendar from ITA Software:

The fare allows ‘end-on-end’ pricing, so I searched for flights from Washington-Dulles as well and managed to get something for about $580 — through Newark. Basically it was the Newark – Honolulu fare, plus DC-Newark roundtrip. Many dates were pricier, though, based on whether or not I could find cheap tickets between DC and Newark.

So if you live somewhere other than Miami, Newark, or Dallas, this still may be useful. You can fly yourself to the start of the trip — or even potentially include additional flying on the same ticket with United.

Update: Thanks for the tip in the comments, apparently American has matched out of Dallas and Miami.

  3. Can someone please point where they see AA fares from DFW. I tried searching for both HNL / OGG in for entire November / December and the cheapest I found is $555 (from ITA software). Am I missing something here??

  4. The $420 deal out of Miami seems to be dead, but can still be had for <$700. Since I was targeted for UA's double PQM promo, that works out to around .03/PQM, and Gold status for next year. That might not be a bad deal.

  5. Actually, I changed the departure city to MCO, which is my home airport. It is actually about $30 cheaper out of MIA, so the math works out even better if you can use MIA.
