He Was Approved for 1 p.m. Diamond Checkout — Then the Hotel Had Police Remove Him and Ban Him for 30 Days

A hotel called the cops on a Diamond member who requested 2 p.m. late checkout, according to One Mile at a Time.

  • This Wyndham Rewards Diamond member initially asked for 2 p.m. late check-out at the La Quinta Miami Lakes hotel, and was told at check-in that they could only have until 1 p.m.

  • The program’s elite late check-out benefit is subject to availability, and for up to 2 hours after standard checkout. That aligns with 1 p.m.

The guest says housekeeping began pounding on their door repeatedly starting around 10:30 a.m., continuing for 90 minutes. Staff reportedly entered the room despite the guest saying “late checkout.” The employee responded only with “no ingles.”

The member’s recourse was to try to get in touch with the front desk, but they apparently did not answer repeated calls. Come nearly noon, a hotel staffer entered the room and yelled at the guest to leave immediately, threatening to call police.

That’s when the guest went down to the front desk. The agent there refused to contact the original check-in agent who granted 1 p.m. late checkout, refused to give the manager’s name, and refused to provide contact information. The police were called.

Officers arrived while the guest was on the phone with Wyndham corporate. They apologized – but removed him anyway, since the hotel reported he was trespassing, and he says that they told him he was banned for 30 days. He was escorted off the property five officers – for using the elite checkout benefit he was told was being honored.

One Mile at a Time calls it “wild.” Although I’ve actually reported on guests facing law enforcement removal when they expected a hotel to honor their elite benefits. Specifically, a Marriott Courtyard refused to honor the elite $10 food and beverage amenity and when the guest invoked the Bonvoy $50 benefit guarantee, that’s when law enforcement was called.

Just a reminder that with most loyalty programs, elite benefits are not guaranteed even when they purport to offer a guarantee.

  1. Did I miss the announcement?

Has Wyndham Hotels Merged with Hertz Rent a Jail Cell company? Must be?

  2. Ah, see @Dan, speaking of why rigid ‘broken windows’ policing and ‘zero tolerance’ law enforcement is ripe for abuse and harm of people… Yup, @Ray, FL and Vegas; never again… if I can help it.

  3. @Ray – had me at “La Quinta”

Wyndham Rewards somehow considers “La Quinta” a “midscale” brand. What time do they start banging on the door and call police at their “economy” brands?

  4. Hotel belongs in the Conde Nasty ?
The Barshops would never have called the cops for this when they owned the brand.

  5. @1990 – Vegas and parts of Florida would be bankrupt if it was not for the convention/conference centers that draw in people who need to attend for their jobs and then get hosed with ridiculous resort and parking fees, $10 cups of coffee and bottles of water, $50 mediocre fast food lunches, etc. plus the high tax rates on anything tourism-related.

  6. On private property, like an aircraft or hotel, police will be obliged to enforce a removal request from an authorized employee, so there is no constructive purpose to be served by vociferating against the erroneous employee — once it is clear they will not reconsider their erroneous action or decision.

Better to VERY discretely record the interactions on a device, and then take it up later with corporate or executive management for a more constructive remedy.

If that fails, send your recordings and documents to Gary Leff, and then sit back and relax/enjoy while VFTW works its magic.
