Passengers Ripped Out Screens, Smashed Remotes, And Wrecked The Cabin On Transatlantic Flight [Roundup]

News and notes from around the interweb:

  • Turkish Airlines passengers from New York to Istanbul “threw everything they could find on the ground and, not content with that, they also ripped out the remote control for the in-flight entertainment system and threw it on the ground.”

  • American Airlines is charging solo travelers more on at least half of flights

Our team of flight deal experts randomly searched for 200 one-way flights through the end of the year and into early 2026 from four of American’s largest hubs – Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Philadelphia (PHL), Miami (MIA), and Charlotte (CLT) – and found that the airline is charging solo travelers higher fares on more than half of them. To be precise, the carrier was charging single passengers higher fares on 104 of the 200 random domestic routes we searched.

Thus far, we’ve only seen these higher American fares on domestic one-way flights – not on roundtrip bookings, giving solo travelers an easy way to avoid paying a penalty for flying alone. We’re also not seeing these price differences creep into international flights or any award tickets for travelers redeeming AAdvantage miles.

  • American Airlines will allow meal pre-orders up to 20 hours prior to departure, down from 24 hours. This is nice for those buying tickets or changing flights close to departure, as well as those whose upgrades clear right at a day out.

  • Stop. The. Madness. Just cut this out now.

DEN – ORD I boarded at the end of group 2, just as they started gate checking bags. The bins were less than half full.

It really is terrible customer experience.

  • Food for thought. Low dollar table players may not be profitable for high cost strip casinos, but neither are empty tables. And once you’ve got the infrastructure in place, your marginal cost is pretty much just the dealer. So you need variable pricing, attracting the whales but liquidating your unsold inventory of table seats at low per bet prices when gambler volume dissipates. And you need to spend on marketing even for those players.

Same logic applies to room nights, which most properties understand, except that resort fees create a price floor that undercuts filling rooms and generating ancillary revenue (like gambling).

  • Accurate: Never take your shoes off and walk on the aircraft. Wear clothes that cover your body – you don’t want your skin touching.

  1. What a frustrating round-up, Gary. It’s like a ‘greatest hits’ of awful. Yikes.

  2. 2 comments:

Solo travelers ARE NOT being charged more. There is a discount for booking multiple seats. That is not the same thing. BTW ai am a widower now so will always be booking as a solo travelers so impacted by the difference but don’t care – many places discount for multiple purchases. PLEASE get off your soap box.

As a long time gambler in Las Vegas the large strip casinos will not lower table minimums just to fill a table. It is essentially collusion but $15 live BJ (and $50 if you want 3-2 payout) is basically what you will find. Just bring a larger bankroll like I do

  3. Casino hotels sell unsold rooms to their sister casino at full price thereby moving profits to the hotel which is not limited by the profit it can make.

  4. As for slots, I like the old mechanical single line quarter slots although I will play three line slots if there is nothing else. Old style roulette is good. Old style craps is good but I rarely play. I am really not much of a gambler.

  5. Charging solo travellers more especially out of hubs, is mostly victimless. These are likely to be OPM flyers anyways, so who cares what they pay.
I m happy some corporate drone flying for work gets to subsidize our vacation.

  6. @Thing 1 — Good distinction. I’m sure the Greeks and Armenians appreciate you calling out the Turks. And in this case, it seems appropriate. However, the respective genocides (1914-1922) and later pogrom (1955) are probably far worse than a mere dirty aircraft.

  7. I play $25-$200 a hand at blackjack but Vegas still is pretty bad nowadays due to a severe lack of comps to offset losses. For my gambling I don’t expect to be treated like royalty but I do expect free drinks, a free meal at a half decent restaurant if I bet high or play for long enough, and maybe – just maybe – be offered a truly free room on my next visit. Normally I get the free drinks. That just takes a lot of the fun out of things and makes me view my losses less as entertainment. Your perspective makes a lot of sense.

  8. Since Vegas has gone to 6:5 blackjack over 3:2 blackjack, it isn’t even worth playing anymore. It was never a long-term winning proposition to begin with, with a house edge of 0.43 percent for a perfect play on 3:2, but the house edge on 6:5 is 1.82 percent. The 6:5 payout increases the house edge by ~1.39%, meaning the player’s odds are worse, losing an additional $1.39 per $100 wagered compared to 3:2. Nobody who actually understands blackjack and just wants to play for fun understanding that the house will always win over time wants to play 6:5. On the strip you only find 6:5, except for some very high roller games. Downtown has mostly gone 6:5 as well, although there are a couple places where you can find 3:2 for a reasonable minimum bet. Part of the reason for empty tables is that they have made the games much less attractive.

  9. Didn’t Jory Rand of ABC News report that Turkish Airlines passengers were just peacefully ripping out entertainment controllers for entertainment and warning that bringing police onboard the plane to arrest them would only escalate the situation.

  10. “Solo travelers ARE NOT being charged more. There is a discount for booking multiple seats. That is not the same thing”

So, if the solo traveler is paying more for a seat than someone booking multiple seats, that’s not being charged more? Make it make sense. Explain like I’m six how paying X+something is not more than paying X.

  11. Yesterday, I tried to order food for my flight 23 hours later. The app showed the 20 hour verbiage – but stated that I couldn’t order because my flight was within 20 hours-which is wasn’t.
When I called aa- they said the window was 24 hours. Typical aa incompetence.

  12. “American Airlines is charging solo travelers more on at least half of flights”

Just like pretty much every major retailer does when they sell varied quantities of things. Is American Airlines special in some way?
