Qantas First Class Award Space Available
Australia is one of the toughest frequent flyer awards, at least in premium cabins. In order to fly business or first class between the US and Australia you often have to connect in Asia.
However Qantas premium cabin awards are easier to book than you think, because American AAdvantage hides the seats from their members. Here’s when they’re available and how to book them.
Watch a Self-Upgrader Get Dragged Out of Korean Air Business Class
Self-upgrading to business class has never been considered okay. It also rarely ever works. I’ve seen people try it and they’re always sent back to coach. Usually they’re a bit sheepish as they head back, sometimes offering some innocent-sounding explanation about how they thought it was the same cabin (no they didn’t!) and the seat was empty.
Passengers who refuse to move get the David Dao treatment.
Korean Air Eliminates Award Holds
Korean Air has eliminated the ability to put award tickets on hold, with or without points in your account. This applies to awards for Korean Air travel (which could generally be held a month, and used to be able to be held nearly indefinitely) as well as to partner awards (which could be held ~ 5 days).

Breaking: New Marriott Program Launches August 18th, Here’s What You Need to Know
Three months ago Marriott shared details on how they’d be bringing their three loyalty programs together with Marriott Rewards, Ritz-Carlton Rewards, and Starwood Preferred Guest all operating on a single platform and single set of rules starting in August.
The new Marriott program launches August 18. I spoke with David Flueck, Marriott’s Senior Vice President of Global Loyalty, on Tuesday to talk about the transition and get several more questions answers about what to expect.
Partially Caving to China’s Demands, Here’s How US Airlines Refer to Taiwan Now
While at first it appeared that American’s Chairman Parker and United’s Chair Garvey had surrendered to Chairman Mao, the reality seems a little more nuanced than that.
We’ll see if these State Department-worthy maneuvers suffice to stay out of China’s crosshairs, whether China declares US airlines to be failing to comply, or whether there are problems with airport slots in China, with convenient gate access, or myriad other permit problems on the ground.
American’s 767s Will Be Retired in 2020, but Lima Will Get the Worst Aircraft the Longest
At American’s ‘Crew News’ employee forum on Wednesday a Lima-based flight attendant asked about the airline’s plans to send new aircraft to Lima — the 757s and 767s they’re getting just aren’t reliable. The airline’s CEO Doug Parker began answering by saying “there are challenges with Lima because of the altitude” (although it’s worth noting that British Airways, Air France and KLM all fly Boeing 777s there) but they recognize that the Boeing 767 “doesn’t look like the rest of the airline” in terms of customer experience. Parker has talked in the past about the need to get rid of the Boeing 767s from the fleet although while I think the business class experience is subpar coach is roomier. American Airlines Boeing 767 Business Class The airline ordered 787s which will replace 767s in a…

CEO Interview: Aeroplan Changes Coming After Air Canada Breakup
I spoke with Jeremy Rabe, the new CEO of Aeroplan’s parent company Aimia, about what changes to expect for premium cabin awards, fees and surcharges, and what transfer rates they’ll offer for points moved to other frequent flyer programs.
He also shared reactions to selling points cheap (he’s a board member of LifeMiles) and the future of spinning off frequent flyer programs given Air Canada’s breakup with Aeroplan and the air berlin topbonus bankruptcy.
