Southwest Will Pay You to Switch Flights—So It Can Resell Your Seat for More [Roundup]

News and notes from around the interweb:

  • Southwest will begin pitching passengers to switch off heavily-booked flights within a week of departure so that they can re-sell those seats at higher fares. The expectation is that this project may raise revenue by 20 basis points.

The solution is pitched as a win-win, allowing passengers increased flexibility while helping the airline improve its overall revenue profile. Airlines can also avoid the customer service hit of dealing with oversold flights at the airport on the day of travel, shifting some of those passengers to an alternate flight in advance. That advance notice also typically makes the experience more palatable for travelers, letting them spend the extra time not at the airport.

  • The no annual fee Mesa Homeowners Card – which awards transferable points for your mortgage and earns 3x on daycare, taxes and insurance utilities, home improvement and maintenance – now offers a complimentary year of Instacart+, bundling Peacock and New York Times cooking. It already covers a Costco membership and comes with a Lowe’s statement credit as well as others.

  • Register for the Marriott Bonvoy new “Celebrate 2025” global promotion: 2,025 bonus points per paid stay, up to 3 stays from October 28, 2025 to January 10, 2026. Outdoors properties receive an extra 2,000 bonus points per stay. Only 2,000 points (~ $12) and capped at 3 stays it’s pretty meh, but still worth the clicks to register.

  • This is what they’re standing in line to get in for:

  1. Southworst is trying to offset the loss of revenue they have caused themselves as longtime flyers flee from them and are now flying other airlines. The morons in charge of Southworst have ruined the once great airline – the airline is now swirling the bowl

  2. $20?

It has happened to be once when Delta called and asked if I’m willing to switch to a flight leaving an hour later. I believe they offered $100 or so.

I was dreading the 5:30 AM flight so happily took it to fly a bit later.

  3. 1990 – what is “rare” is that – for once – you have come to your senses. I have been “correct” each and every time in my past postings , while you were wrong. It must be refreshing for you to actually experience reality as you pull your head out of your ass.

  4. Speaking of Marriott, anyone see the “Free Marriott Bonvoy Gold Status” post on DoC earlier today? I must say, commenter ‘CFPB general’ gave a ‘hall of fame’-worthy performance.
