Star Alliance Gold for $999 and a European Adventure Included

The next Star MegaDO has launched for sale. Everyone who goes on the trip gets Star Alliance Gold status for a year from Aegean Airlines.

It’s a European adventure with a charter flight from Zurich to Hamburg to Mykonos and then Athens. The “program covers a close and personal encounter with the brand new Bombardier C series, landing at Airbus private airport in Hamburg, Finkenwerder, home of the A320 NEO, all interior installations for the A380 and the A350, a sundowner at the Santa Marina hotel in Mykonos and much more”

The “participant who takes the most Aegean flights in the month of June 2016 through August 2016 gets awarded 100.000 Aegean Miles+Bonus miles” and there’s a contest where one participant will get Aegean Miles+Bonus Gold for 5 years, and there are prizes of 100,000 and 250,000 Miles+Bonus miles.

Interestingly, the Aegean award chart may be the best in the Star Alliance.

  • 42,000 miles roundtrip for United domestic first class (although US-Hawaii awards are bizarrely 110,000 miles roundtrip up front!)
  • 90,000 miles roundtrip for US-Europe business class, and North Africa is included in Europe. First class is 120,000 miles roundtrip.
  • 110,000 miles roundtrip for US-Middle East business class, 150,000 miles roundtrip for first class
  • 150,000 miles roundtrip in business class between US and all of Asia and the South Pacific
  • 90,000 miles roundtrip in business class between the US and South America
  • 110,000 miles roundtrip for US-Africa business class, 150,000 miles roundtrip for first class

MegaDO trips aren’t cheap, and you still have to pay for travel to and from Europe (they have negotiated pricing if you want) and for your hotel nights on the trip.

I won’t be going. I’ve never done a MegaDO in Europe — I participated in Star MegaDO 3 and I flew on the oneworld MegaDO four years ago. This event comes right before my annual board meeting at work, so it’s out of the question. But it will appeal to several readers.

Past MegaDOs have been covered by the New York Times, by the Associated Press, the Wall Street Journal, by USA Today, by The Economist and more. Read some of the past coverage to see if the events are for you.

Here’s a short TV clip about a past Star MegaDO:

For avoidance of doubt I am not involved in this event in any way. I do not benefit financially from it either.

  1. Nice to know how much my *G is worth. The events sound like fun but why would anyone pay $$$$ to take more economy class flights? The last thing I need is more pointless air travel, particularly when it doesn’t provide too many EQMs.
