United has announced its new business class suites, which will appear on new delivery Boeing 787s starting later this year – with passenger service beginning in 2026. The first destinations will be San Francisco to London and Singapore.
Three weeks ago I told you that United Airlines would announce its new business class suite in early May. They have a customer event in Brooklyn tomorrow as well as a media preview for the new seat. And the airline has been teasing their reveal on social media. But photos are already available.
American’s premium entry isn’t quite ready for prime time, though, and if the airline has their way service might not be very premium either. The business class doors aren’t certified for use yet, and the airline is still working on FAA approval to operate the plane with just 7 flight attendants rather than the current 8.
Delta was expected to start offering new bedding and a mattress pad in long haul business class in early May. That was delayed because the cost of the Missoni products become prohibitive under the new tariff regime.
Now – just like with taking delivery of new Airbus aircraft without tariffs – Delta has figured out a way around the most draconian fees so that they can move forward with the product plan.
Awards for new American Airlines business class suites are wide open between Chicago and London Heathrow this summer as well as between Philadelphia and London. The new American Airlines 787-9s debuts June 5. That’s when the first plane flies Chicago – Los Angeles and back and then on to London. Come July all three of American’s Chicago – London flights transition to this new aircraft (“789P”). It features business class suites with doors, including an enhanced bulkhead row, as well as new premium economy seats. The plane is also equipped with ViaSat wifi which is far more functional than the Panasonic installs that have been featured on all of American’s wifis prior to the ‘block 2’ 787-8s which were delivered after the pandemic. They’re moving away from flight attendants collecting headsets from passengers, up to an hour prior to landing. No more interrupting sleep, no more ending inflight entertainment early.
The Polaris business class seat remains a laggard. Though they were testing concepts for new business suites with doors 3 years ago, we still haven’t seen a new product. It appears that an announcement is coming in May and that doors remain an open question owing it sounds to me like the FAA’s insistence on additional flight attendant staffing for them.
