Delta and American No Longer Offer Club ‘Membership’, It’s a Subscription-Based Upsell Instead

So much for notions of membership. A US airline club used to be a members-only club not just an extra amenity to pay to add onto your ticket. You could access it as a member. In the old days when you didn’t need a same day ticket to clear security you could go wait in the lounge to meet an arriving passenger.

As an historical vestige of that some airline clubs would even let you request gate passes after 9/11 as a service to its members.

American Airlines President: We Didn’t Mean It When We Promised Free Texting

Delta, Alaska, and Southwest Airlines all offer free inflight texting. In September 2017, at American’s Investor and Media Day, the airline announced they would offering free inflight texting however that never happened. Last month I asked them about it and was told they aren’t doing it after all.

American got its media for improving customer experience, and then didn’t have to actually improve customer experience.

Tara Reid and Her Dog Were Kicked Off Delta Flight After Seat Assignment and Pillow Meltdown

Sharknado and American Pie star Tara Reid and her dog were kicked off of Delta flight 613 from Los Angeles to New York JFK yesterday.

Apparently the actress was apoplectic over her seat assignment and that she didn’t have a pillow. The aircraft had already pushed back when the captain announced to the plane that they’d be returning to the gate causing a delay.

New Low Value Mileage ‘Upsells’ Will Make Delta Elite Upgrades a Rarity

During the airline’s earnings call yesterday CEO Ed Bastian says Delta is now up to monetizing “about 60%” of their first class seats. So they’re behind goal (though they’re apparently ahead of their peers who are likely still in the 40’s).

One way they plan to increase the number of seats they’re upselling to customers, rather than offering as complimentary upgrades, is to offer payment by miles as an alternative to cash.
