Oakland airport is changing its name again – this time to Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport. Last year they sought to change it from Oakland International Airport to San Francsico Bay Oakland International Airport. SFO sued to block that, and a judge agreed (which was dumb).
Americans don’t know geography, and can’t find Oakland on a map. So Oakland airport and San Francisco airport are locked in a legal battle over whether the Oakland airport can call itself “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.”

Today Southwest Airlines controls the vast majority of traffic at the airport that was dedicated by Charles Lindbergh in 1927 and was the site of Amelia Earhart’s final trip departure. It hasn’t seen investment in fifteen years. And locals are going to use all of the levers of process to make sure it doesn’t see any, any time soon.
It doesn’t seem like the major challenge with transcon and long haul international flights from the airport is the airport’s name as port officials seem to suggest. And “East Bay Oakland International Airport” doesn’t seem like it would do much to change that. For political reasons it doesn’t seem like they’d consider “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.” But why not? European low cost carriers have long promoted Bratislava as Vienna even though it’s literally in another country!
It was only Thursday that United Airlines announced they would offer rapid coronavirus testing at the airport in San Francisco for passengers taking its Hawaii flights. Testing would be available by appointment, with results available in 15 minutes, and the airline hoped the $250 price point would come down in the near future.
Since then Hawaiian Airlines also announced same day airport testing coming for its passengers for $150. The State of Hawaii plans to allow people to enter the state without 14 day quarantine starting October 15, provided they present a negative Covid test taken within 72 hours of arrival. United says the state will accept their Abbott rapid tests.
Now Oakland airport is announcing that its Hawaii passengers can get rapid tests for free starting October 15.
