Police Say Peeing All Over the Plane Isn’t What Got This Man Arrested

The San Luis Obispo Tribune carries what may be the best headline ever about a Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Myers, Florida to Detroit on Thursday night: “He reeked of alcohol and peed all over the plane. But that’s not what got him arrested, police say”

The man reportedly drank at the airport prior to his flight. He “nodded off in a chair by his gate” but things began to go downhill when he woke up. A gate agent walked by and smelled alcohol but allowed him to board anyway. That’s always a good idea.

Meltdown: Passenger Punches Ceiling, Takes Off Shirt

A drunk man went on a tirade on a jetBlue flight departing Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

Before things really heat up you see passengers walking in the aisle, dealing with luggage in the overhead bin, and hear the flight attendant call button pressed repeatedly. A flight attendant announces that “if you continue to press the call button, you’re gonna be staying here in Santo Domingo. If yo continue to press it playing games you will be staying here in Santo Domingo.”

That’s when the passenger loses it.

Why Some Passengers Wait for Planes and Why Planes Wait for Some Passengers

Tyler Cowen offers several explanations for why wait times vary across stores. Some stores put impulse purchase items near the checkout counter, and need long lines to make sales. Some stores have more conflict at checkout than others, rental transactions take longer than cash transactions, and long lines can substitute for raising prices by adding a cost to the consumer (waiting) which substitutes for a cost to the seller (adding staff). The explanation that most interested me in the context of aviation is Long lines may serve the cause of price discrimination. Perhaps the store offers personalized shopper services, free home delivery, or other services at a premium. These ancillary benefits might be more profitable if shopping takes just a bit of time.
