Beware The Google Airline Scam, Phone Number Search Results Are Corrupted

In the spring I wrote about scammers taking over an old Singapore Airlines phone number and pretending to be Singapore Airlines when customers call. The scammers charge high fees for basic services the airline would normally provide for free, like helping with seat assignments.

It turns out there’s another variation on this scam: the agency gets Google’s search results for the airline at a specific airport changed to display their phone number.

How Delta Explains Away Hours-Long Hold Times

All airlines have had long hold times, but Delta’s have generally been the longest. And their website doesn’t do a lot of the things you might need, like handling schedule changes well and erroring out with simple tasks.

Delta’s CEO was asked about what they’re doing to address telephone hold times, and what customers should do for help in the meantime, during the airline’s earnings call.

How American Airlines Is Prepared In Case Your Cell Phone Catches Fire

While it doesn’t happen often, lithium ion batteries catch fire. The fire can usually be contained in the passenger cabin. It’s harder to deal with as cargo, which is why airlines don’t allow these sorts of batteries to travel in checked luggage.

As a result of this risk American Airlines now boards fire containment bags and heat resistant gloves on all of their aircraft.

25,000 Delta Miles for Internet Phone Service

Earthlink Voice is offering 25,000 Delta miles for internet phone service, a minimum commitment of six months would appear to be required to get the miles. They’re also offering 10,000 miles for using their high-speed internet. (Hat tip to Free Frequent Flyer Miles.) Update: Reader Alan reports that the fine print on the offer requires a 12-month commitment. So even though miles should post within six you’ll probably face a penalty for cancelling early if you want out before 12 months are up.
