Southwest Airlines Won’t Furlough Anyone Through 2021, Will Spend Airline Aid On Employees

Dec 28 2020

Southwest really is going to spend some of the bailout money on employees (perhaps 50%) which is how the government aid was sold – unlike United Airlines which is likely to receive about $3 billion and plans to only pay its 16,000 furloughed workers through March as-required keeping the rest of the taxpayer money for themselves and their shareholders.

Southwest Airlines Adds Two New Cities, Including (A Return To) Fresno

Dec 16 2020

Southwest has aggressively added destinations during the pandemic. Some, like Chicago O’Hare, because of a unique opportunity to gain access to an airport that was full prior to 2020. Others are leisure destinations where they’re seeking new revenue opportunities for planes that have nowhere to go.

Over the past couple of years Southwest growth has been constrained with the grounding of the MAX. They haven’t had the planes to add new destinations. Now they have a surplus of planes because they haven’t needed the frequencies they used to offer, especially on business routes between major cities. And with the end of ‘middle seat blocking’ on Southwest they have even less need to add incremental flights in those markets.

Last Day To Convert Southwest Airlines Travel Credits To Points

Dec 15 2020

When Southwest Airlines extended elite status back in April, and made it easier this year to earn both status and a Companion Pass, they extended the validity of travel vouchers.

There’s been discussion for months about being able to convert travel funds into Rapid Rewards points and that functionality is finally available. The rate is reasonable but I won’t be taking them up on the offer. Here’s why.

Southwest Extend Its Schedule Through August – But They’re A Month Late

Dec 10 2020

It’s interesting that they waited an extra month to program their schedule, but they’re publishing it three months farther out than they’d previously led customers to believe.

And it’s useful to know when the schedule becomes available for access to the cheapest fares on presumed peak travel days, such as July 4th weekend. Southwest hasn’t had change fees, even before the rest of the airlines jumped on the bandwagon for some fares and certain flights. So you can book forward-looking cheap tickets if it makes sense and retain flexibility.

Full Pay To The Last Day: Southwest Union Tells Cabin Crew Not To Worry About Furloughs Notices

Nov 04 2020

Publicly the flight attendants union has been saying no to concessions, and also implies to members that the airline won’t go through with furloughs – that WARN Act notices will be nothing to worry about. That’s a dangerous position. It suggests Southwest is bluffing and will pay to remain fully overstaffed, while its competitors have succeeded in downsizing and when the airline has publicly told investors they’re unable to do that.

Despite Elite Status, Playboy Playmate Kicked Off Southwest Airlines Over Revealing Outfit

Nov 02 2020

Eve Marie is a Southwest Airlines A-List member and companion pass holder. She also identifies herself as a Playboy Playmate. She reports being removed from of a Southwest Airlines flight on Thursday because her top was deemed too revealing.

She was eventually allowed to fly – but only when she covered up with clothing lent to her by a crewmember. Not she’s calling for change at the Dallas-based carrier.

Southwest Airlines has tons of cash, not a lot of debt, and a new view on economics of on-time performance. They’re not rushing back the 737 MAX. And they shared interesting data on the financial performance of Rapid Rewards, how business travel is doing, and explained the financial reason blocking middle seats made sense before but no longer does.

Southwest Says If There’s Ever A Time To Walk Away Being Exclusively Boeing It’s Now

Oct 22 2020

After 50 years committed to Boeing, Southwest Airlines said on its third quarter earnings call that if there was ever a time to consider buying non-Boeing aircraft it would be now. They aren’t growth constrained. They have plenty of unused and underutilized aircraft in their fleet. And that gives them the space and time to transition to a new aircraft.
