There are few flights, few passengers. The airlines are applying for government money that limits their ability to furlough workers.
So instead of sitting idle they’re spending their time making masks. Quality, non-scammy masks are hard to source. Delta even had half a million masks stolen.

As long as everyone remains socially distanced, and has a liberal leave policy such that even the suspicion of being sick is enough to stay away, this seems like a great use of time and better than just sending everyone home.
Airline employees are considered essential, but they aren’t really if they’re not contributing to keeping transportation and supply chains intact. These employees are making themselves essential. We should all make ourselves useful if we aren’t working our normal jobs right now I think.
All those United eye masks we have accumulated over the years turn out to make great face masks when worn upside down. United must have thousands of them in storage they could send out to every frequent flyer. Think of the free publicity and good will that would generate.
don’t love the fact that ?none of the workers are wearing masks (Coronavirus Is Aerosolized Through Talking, Exhalation from Medscape a medical newsletter) and the one walking with a cart has a mask that is hanging below her face 🙁
