Ticket Sales Still Negative, With Airlines Giving You More Money Than You Give Them

Here’s data on travel agent ticket sales from the Airlines Reporting Corporation.

  • 37% fewer tickets issued year-over-year
  • 42% lower spending on tickets year-over-year
  • Corporate sales down 40%
  • Leisure sales down 37%
  • Online sales down 36%

This data doesn’t include sale of tickets directly with airlines. Before the pandemic American Airlines was selling as much as $63 million a day on its website.

Airlines are still refunding as many third party sales as they are generating new sales. However overall it does appear that the number of cancellations is no longer greater than new bookings. That’s mostly because the trips that were booked before the pandemic have already been cancelled, but it’s a way of thinking about having truly hit bottom already. Now there’s nowhere to go but up.

  4. Starting Thursday, I am heading out for an unknown an amount of time – since my office is remote, I’ll work remotely during the day and enjoy a national or state park in the late afternoon and evening. Time to cash in on 1.5 million Hilton Points and $45/night hotel rooms.
