United MileagePlus Cards Now Earn 2 Miles Per Dollar On Rent Through Bilt — But At A Cost

Last year Bilt and Alaska introduced 3x points-earning on rent on Alaska’s co-brand Visa cards, for a fee. In May, Bilt suggested we’d see more offerings like this and I suggested it would be a Chase card, probably United or Southwest.

United consumer cardmembers can now earn points on rent through Bilt: “2 total miles per $1 spent when you pay rent on-time through Bilt using any participating United MileagePlus card.”

  • 2x on up to $50,000 in rent payments per calendar year

  • One mile posts with the card statement and the other a bonus point in your MileagePlus account. That’s because this isn’t a benefit of the Chase card as such, but a deal between United and Bilt.

  • This applies to the United Gateway card, Explorer, Quest, Club and Presidential Plus.

  • You pay a 3% fee.

To earn points on rent, add the card to your Bilt accont, set it as preferred rent payment method, and pay rent through Bilt.

At 3% I’d gladly earn 3x Alaska miles. 2 United miles seems break-even to me at best, unless you’re using it to generate elite qualifying miles as well towards status.

I’m personally looking forward to earning points on mortgages with Bilt’s new Cardless cards starting in February.

  1. Well, if Bilt 2.0 goes full-dodo, and those of us with their MC don’t make the cut by Cardless, UA or Atmos may ‘be best!’ secondary options. Covfefe.
