News and notes from around the interweb:
- Cities where credit card balances are increasing the fastest the highest balances and fastest-growing balances seem to center on cities which are also doing exceptionally well, so this may just be income-smoothing.
- How hard is it for an airline to just tell the truth? (Filed under changes you’re going to like)
How's this for corporate doublespeak? @united next week will begin charging extra money for some regular economy class seats. Other airlines do the same, so I understand the rationale. But is it an "exciting new product"? For whom? pic.twitter.com/xZBBdXpUyh

- Qantas is asking employees to volunteer to work extra shifts for free this Christmas to provide additional services to passengers. Lots of ‘bah humbug’ responses.
Qantas is asking staff to work for free this Christmas.
It’s outrageous. It’s illegal. It’s wage theft.
If Qantas get away with this, every boss will want to do the same next year.#JoinYourUnion #PayUpQantas pic.twitter.com/BIXSIrdSLm

Non-line employees from almost all carriers are requested to help during peak season. This is nothing new. Since they are all salaried staff, they are getting paid.
United is truly going down the toilet, and it’s all thanks to the terrible Scott Kirby. Oscar really needs to reevaluate his legacy, because he’s done jack sh** and just let Kirby run loose counting beans. Literally nothing positive out of the Oscar era of United. If anything, it was better under Smisek.
@Ray – I don’t know that I agree. 8-across business cabins were pretty bad. At least their hard product is better.
That might get the only exception, though.
Dear Gary,
Does the United “Preferred” message mean that Golds & Platinums will no longer be able to select extra-legroom seats at booking? If so, I’ll be status-challenging … at American I guess.
Thanks,
Peter.
