You Can Now Earn Miles for Airbnb Stays – and Get $50 Back

Virgin America has a new partnership with Airbnb. It gets you:

  • 1500 points for your first booking (as a new Airbnb customer)
  • 20,000 points if you rent out your own place on Airbnb

  • 1 point per dollar spent on Airbnb

You actually have to start your transactions through the Virgin America Airbnb partnership page in order to earn these points. The relationship isn’t as seamless as ‘linking’ your accounts once and earning eligible points automatically. (HT: One Mile at a Time)

Offers valid for bookings created via Virgin America/Airbnb booking page only. To qualify for these point offers, users must be previously enrolled in Elevate. Elevate members must provide their membership number on Virgin America’s Airbnb booking page in order to earn points for their stay or becoming a Host. New Airbnb users will receive a 1,500 points first time bonus after their first reservation is completed. Existing members are eligible to earn one point for every dollar spent on completed Airbnb reservations booked through Virgin America’s Airbnb booking page. Only one membership number can be provided for each reservation, and membership number must be entered every time you book to qualify for point earning. New Hosts receive 20,000 bonus points after their first host booking is completed. Bonus Points will be posted to the member’s account within 4-6 weeks after completed stays

You’ll likely want to pay for your next Airbnb with an American Express card, because American Express will give you $50 back when you spend $100 with Airbnb by the end of the year — and that includes on a $100 Airbnb gift card. You need to log into American Express add the offer to your account. (The offer may even be available to add to more than one American Express card in order to get it multiple times, though your mileage may vary.)

Enrollment limited. Offer valid for approved bookings and gift cards purchased on Airbnb.com and the Airbnb mobile app. Offer valid for a single transaction of $100 or more made by 12/31/15. Offer not valid for bookings made with gift cards. Offer valid for eligible domestic and international Airbnb locations. Must add offer to eligible American Express® Card and use same Card to redeem. Only US-issued American Express Cards are eligible for this offer. Limit 1 statement credit per American Express Card across all American Express offer channels. Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after 12/31/15, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase. Note that American Express may not receive information about your qualifying purchase from the merchant until all items from your qualifying purchase have been provided by the merchant. Statement credit may be reversed if qualifying purchase is cancelled. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as qualifying for the offer, you will not receive the statement credit. For example, your transaction will not qualify if it is not made directly with the merchant. In addition, in most cases, you will not receive the statement credit if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet or through a third party or if the merchant uses a mobile or wireless card reader to process it. By adding an offer to a Card, you agree that American Express may send you communications about the offer. POID: BXLY:0001

I’ve never stayed at an Airbnb, but at $100 stay would cost me only $50 and I’d earn 1600 Virgin America Elevate points as well which are worth about $35 to me. That’s pretty good.

  1. Gary,

The offer is even better than what you have listed. When I click the link I see 1,500 points and $20 credit on first purchase so stacked with Amex Offer that’s $30 for $100 and 1600 Elevate points. YMMV when clicking the link though.

  2. From the T&C it’s not clear that you can get both the sign-up bonus and the 1 mile per $ spend on the first trip. There are two categories: “New Airbnb User Offer” and “Existing Airbnb Guest Offer”. The former does not mention the $/mile bonus.

Also not clear if the $20 credit applies to the first booking or a future booking. From the T&C: “The Airbnb travel credit will automatically appear in new user accounts upon checkout.” which implies that the credit is a discount on the first booking. But also from the T&C: “Please allow 4-6 weeks from the completion of your trip for posting of travel credit and Elevate Points” which implies that the credit is not available for the first booking.

  3. You wrote: You’ll likely want to pay for your next Airbnb with an American Express card, because American Express will give you $50 back when you spend $100 with Airbnb by the end of the year — and that includes on a $100 Airbnb gift card.

But the T&C states: Offer valid for a single transaction of $100 or more made by 12/31/15. Offer not valid for bookings made with gift cards.

    So which is it?

  4. @Manny you can buy a gift card and get the Amex offer. You cannot pay for an airbnb with a gift card or non-qualifying credit card and get the amex offer.
