Status matches offers have been abundant and aggressive the past several months, for instance from Royal Air Maroc (for oneworld status) to ANA (for Star Alliance) to ITA (for SkyTeam).

As travel returns, airlines have been looking to juice their elite ranks. One way they do that is by poaching customers from competitors. It’s hard to attract a customer used to elite treatment and asking them to start with your business at the bottom. So giving them an easy path to switch makes sense.

It also picks up a lot of customers, potentially, who won’t stick around. I matched to Royal Air Maroc Gold and that gets me American Airlines club lounge access – even Flagship lounge access – when flying domestically.

Now another airline has entered the fray. LATAM will match the status of customers with any other frequent flyer program of an airline operating in the region.

• They will match like-to-like up to Black status. After the match you can request to be bumped up a status level when requesting either the LATAM Pass VISA credit card from Banco de Bogotá or Banco de Occidente. Clearly this isn’t just a play for flyers, but for cobrand credit card customers.

This is another status match offer from StatusMatch.com, ‘status match as a service’ offered by the former head of Malaysia Airlines Enrich. Air Canada and Frontier Airlines matches, among others, have run on this platform.

One thing to watch out for, though – they have a pretty good database of status match requests as a result. I wouldn’t submit Air Canada elite status that you got through one of their matches, for instance, since they will know that you didn’t earn that status.

LATAM is no longer a oneworld airline. It left the alliance as part of its new tie-up with Delta, and Delta’s taking an equity stake in the carrier. It is also not a member of SkyTeam. The greatest interest here will be for those that will actually use the status for travel on LATAM. Some benefits do extend, though, to travel with Delta, Aeromexico, Iberia, Qantas and Qatar.
