Before the Iranian Revolution, the hijab was not compulsory. It became mandatory for all women in the country in 1983, under penalty of imprisonment and fines.
Iran has gone so far as to close the Turkish Airlines office in Tehran after local female employees there defied the country’s headscarf requirements.
According to local reports, police responded to the airline’s office to issue a ‘first warning’ but employees “made trouble for the police officers,” and they responded by closing the office but will be permitted to re-open.
While national protests by women picked up steam in 2009 and 2017 – 2019 they accelerated after the September 2022 death of Mahsa Amini under suspicious circumstances while in custody.for not wearing a hijab. Eyewitnesses report that she was beaten to death, while police claim the young woman spontaneously had a heart attack.

Hundreds of people were killed by security forces during the ensuing protests.
I admire Iran same with Saudi Arabia.
Wish we had the western version of them.
@andys. We do have the western version of the sometimes. But in the USA and most free countries we have human rights. Not dictatorships were some are abused murdered or who live in constant fear all the time. The hitler regime does not work.

@AndyS, you’d be surprised to see how many women in Saudi Arabia do not wear any head covering. It’s still a small minority, and mostly they are visitors or people from other countries living there, but how could you tell for sure? Check the official Saudi tourism website to see how they portray women mostly with no head covering. The country is changing in fits and starts, but so far Iran is not (maybe the newly chosen president will try?). and Afghanistan took a major step backward for women with the return to power of Taliban.
When politics and religion become one, any atrocity can be justified by saying that it is the will of God.
Kudos for those women taking a stance against the regime in Iran.
