Here’s When Hurricane-Affected Airports Are Re-Opening

The first thing to understand as airports try to bring service back online after the hurricane is just because an airport is open doesn’t mean there will be many flights.

  • The airport may be tough to get to — not just for you, but for airline employees and for TSA also.

  • Many of these employees evacuated the area too, so they have to return home.


    What Miami Airport Normally Looks Like

  • Planes are out of position. Airlines flew their aircraft out of the hurricane zone to protect them from damage. So aircraft need to get back to these airports.


    When MIA Is Empty

  • An airport that’s open isn’t the same thing as one operating at capacity.

  • Aircraft coming from or going to affected airports will be doubly-impacted from both sides.

It’s going to take some time for operations to return to normal. However airports are re-opening sort of.

The further out the re-opening date the greater the likelihood that this will change.

American Airlines has already cancelled 780 flights for today, and 235 for future days, though that number is certain to grow. They say their first flight into Miami arrived at 7:02 a.m. from Seattle, and their first flight out of the Miami hub was American AA1470 to Las Vegas at 9:17 a.m.

The first arrival this morning was AA1070 from Seattle (SEA), which landed at 7:02 a.m. ET. Our first departure this morning was AA1470 to Las Vegas (LAS), which was airborne at 9:17 a.m. ET.
