After visiting the new Cathay Pacific lounge in Singapore’s brand spanking new terminal 4 it was off to Hong Kong.

Cathay offers 8 flights a day non-stop to Hong Kong from Singapore and they also fly daily to Bangkok. I was on their third flight of the day, the 8 a.m. departure on a Boeing 777-300ER. Sadly though I was on a first class award the aircraft had business as its top cabin. Still, it’s lie flat direct aisle access reverse herringbone business class, for a flight blocked at 3 hours 55 minutes.

I was one of the first passengers to board which gave me a great view of the empty business class cabin. It began to fill up quickly and eventually all but 3 out of 40 business seats would be taken.

I settled into seat 11K. I stowed my laptop bag and carry on in the bin above and started storing items I’d want to use during flight in the various areas by the seat.

I quickly figured out though that the power at my seat wasn’t working. A flight attendant tried it as well, I suppose it makes sense to be skeptical when a passenger says that most passengers are probably doing it wrong. Having confirmed that my power didn’t work, I was taken to another seat to use during flight with the suggestion I return to 11K where my bags were for landing.

I don’t find Cathay Pacific’s trolley-based business class service impressive. They’re moving to dine on demand for long haul, which is more work for crews, but for short- and medium-distance flights it takes a lot to get through a service for a cabin that holds 40 premium passengers.

And while I’m not super impressed by their meals overall, I do find that they’re better than anything I’m served in the states. Between seat, meal and service they have an inflight product better than anything of similar stage length domestically (and that includes JetBlue’s Mint).

Soon enough we were touching down in Hong Kong, where I’d clear transit security (we landed right by E-2) and check out the new American Express Centurion lounge there which offers sit down dining for Black Card members and then spend some time in the first class section of the Pier before flying first class Hong Kong – Boston.
