Cathay Pacific just announced a revamp of how their elite status is earned. And although it’s being reported in some circles as ‘revenue-based’ what they’ve done is adopt something like the British Airways system.. not the United/Delta model.

What are the 10 Fastest Growing Aviation Markets — and What Does That Tell Us About the World?
Thailand is one of the world’s fastest growing aviation markets, so Thai Airways’ challenges can’t be pinned on the overall economy there or the military coup.
China is only number 14, and number 22 looking just at year-over-year data (not surprising given its slumping economy). Still, China is the second largest airline market in the world behind the United States although the US market remains more than 70% larger than the Chinese one.
The fastest growing aviation markets – based on the number of departing seats over the past 5 years are…
Which Is Better to Fly: First Class on a US Airline, or Business Class on a Foreign One?
I’d pick Swiss over Lufthansa. I’d actually take American’s and Delta’s all aisle access fully flat Boeing 777s (and Delta’s 747) over Lufthansa business class! My general rule though is to always choose first class over business class.
Delta Relaxes Award Blackout Dates
In August Delta split up blackout dates on Korean Air by region, improving one of the most frustrating things about booking award travel on partner airlines using Delta miles.
Now — effective October 1 — they’ve fixed that for another partner as well: China Southern. That’s especially useful because award availability on Guangzhou-based China Southern is fairly good across the Pacific and beyond to destinations in Asia and also Australia.
This Isn’t the Reason US Airlines Are Eliminating First Class
Dan Reed writes in Forbes that the decline in international 3-cabin first class amongst US airlines is the result of low price competition from the big Gulf airlines.
He couldn’t be more wrong.
The Most Devalued Program in North America Devalues.. Again
Aeroplan has announced changes going into effect December 15. These are mostly devaluations, like increased prices for business class awards between North America and Europe, and changing the definition of zones for award travel.
US frequent flyers should care about Star Alliance member Air Canada’s Aeroplan frequent flyer program for 3 reasons.
There Are a Lot of Great Card Offers Out There. Here’s Why You Want the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card First.
I’ve been a fan of the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card as an important tool for frequent flyers for a long time because:
- It earns one of the most valuable points currencies, which transfer to a variety of airlines (including in all 3 major airline alliances) and hotels.
- It earns points quickly, with double points on both travel and dining (what travelers tend to spend on most).
Recent reports are that Chase has only wanted to approve this card for new customers that haven’t applied for 5 new cards in the past two years.
That means three things…
United Express Flight Delayed Yesterday When Pilot and Co-Pilot Got Into a Fight
Saturday’s 1:41pm United Express Lubbock – Houston flight operated by ExpressJet was delayed 5 hours for an unusually interesting reason.
United Brings Back Award Holds on Their New Website!
The ability to hold an award is important. Instant ticketing makes life difficult for the frequent flyer, which is why I love American’s 5 day hold policy so much.
United took away the legit ability to do award holds three years ago. But now with the rollout of their new website, they’ve brought it back for folks who have some miles in their account but not enough to ticket their award. Here’s how to use that to your advantage!
American Will Now Charge You for 2 Awards If You Fly Hawaiian Airlines Beyond Hawaii
September 1 we lost the ability to redeem American miles for travel between the mainland US and Hawaii on Hawaiian Airlines. We could still book awards that include Hawaiian for travel with the islands, and to international destinations beyond Hawaii.
It turns out though — and not part of American’s announcement — including Hawaiian Airlines to destinations beyond Hawaii will require redeeming a separate award.
