Will You Pay Delta More to Earn More Miles, Pay the UK Lower Taxes, and Fly Airline Partners for a Better Experience? (Bits ‘n Pieces for March 20, 2014)
News and notes from around the interweb: Scott McCartney posits in the Wall Street Journal that Delta’s shift towards a revenue-based frequent flyer program will create further bad incentives between business travelers versus their companies, with travelers putting off booking travel — to net higher fares and thus more miles. United’s Mercedes tarmac transfers will be extended to Los Angeles and San Francisco (Chicago, Houston and Newark already have the feature). Here are the flights you want to take if you’re O’Hare-based. I tell Crain’s Chicago Business that alliance partners of American (like Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines) and United (like ANA, Asiana, and Turkish) offer flights that passengers might not think of, and that Lufthansa’s Dusseldorf flight often has seats including award space. Effective April 8th: 1 in 5 Marriott Hotels Will Require More Points to Redeem a Free Night
Marriott announced upcoming changes to which hotels are assigned to different award categories effective April 8 — and it’s pretty ugly. 27% of Marriott hotels are going up or down in category. Of those, 22% are decreasing by one category and 78% are increasing by one category One in five Marriott hotels are going to cost more points to redeem a free room night award. This is after last year’s devaluation which included the creation of a new, more expensive category 9 redemption tier, and an increase in points prices for 36% of Marriott hotels (while ~ 1% went down in price). You can find the full list of changes here. Book award reservations no later than April 7 to get current pricing, for stays 50 weeks into the future. One Mile at a Time…
Malaysia MH370 Located… By Courtney Love
This morning I linked to what struck me as one of the more far-fetched theories on Malaysia Airlines flight 370 that didn’t involve space aliens. But we no longer need to speculate. Because Courtney Love has found the plane. Heck, and I’ve turned down media to talk about this because I consider myself a non-expert. Though as one commenter said… swear to god if courtney love finds the f!@#$ plane You can join the 30,000+ people who see these deals and analysis every day — sign up to receive posts by email (just one e-mail per day) or subscribe to the RSS feed. The Short Window to Use US Airways Miles for Award Tickets on Both Star Alliance and oneworld Airlines
US Airways, having taken over merged with larger American Airlines, will be leaving the Star Alliance (where it partners with airlines like United, Lufthansa, Turkish, Asiana, Thai, etc.) on March 30 and joining the oneworld alliance (where it partners with airlines like British Airways, Iberia, LAN, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, etc.) on March 31. As a result, March 30th is the last day to book Star Alliance awards — awards that combine flights on its various Star partners. Starting March 31st you’ll be able to use US Airways miles to book award tickets on its various oneworld partners. Already you’re able to book awards on American Airlines. I’m most looking forward to using British Airways points to book short-distance awards for cheap miles (4500 points each way for flights under 650 miles) from my home airport…
Booking Infant Awards, the End of Cheap Upgrades, How to Scam Your Taxi Driver, and an UberX Tell-All (Bits ‘n Pieces for May 10, 2014)
News and notes from around the interweb: Pizza in Motion follows my advice when a taxi in Paris tries to scam him: wait until you’ve reached your hotel and your luggage is out of the vehicle, then get the hotel’s assistance. You – not the driver – are the hotel’s customer, and they know what a taxi should be charging you. Indispensable if you travel internationally with a child under age 2: Guide to booking award travel with lap infants In the fall when Emirates Skywards became an American Express Membership Rewards transfer partner, I noted that one of the best features of that program is international upgrades from any fare without cash co-pay (although some fares are upgradable only at the airport). Unfortunately that is apparently changing, effective May 1 some Emirates economy tickets…

Clearing Up Misperceptions About Booking Korean Air Using Delta Miles
Points, Miles, and Martinis wrote about Korean Air’s Houston flight and how new routes are often an opportunity for award booking. Korean is a partner of Delta Skymiles (in the loosest sense of the term). But there are many misconceptions about booking Korean Air space using Delta miles, so I thought I’d try to clear some of those up. You need to call Delta to look up availability The Points, Miles, and Martinis blog notes that searching for award space on Korean at Expertflyer.com find “plenty of days where you can pick up 2 award seats in First Class.” However Delta does not allow mileage redemption in international first class. Business class is the top cabin permitted. He goes on to say, “Business Class is harder to find. I couldn’t find it on Expert Flyer”…
How to Assign Seats on Cathay Pacific (It’s Harder Than You’d Think)
Cathay Pacific is strange (though not unique among Asian airlines, see also ‘Asiana’) in blocking many of the seats in their first class cabin. With only 6 seats in their first class cabin on the 777 though that can be frustrating. It makes it tough to assign seats together (as if such a thing exists on this aircraft) when traveling together. In addition, Cathay Pacific will only assign seats 6 months in advance on its website, through airline partners, or if you call the US call center. But you can assign any seats you wish if you call Hong Kong. And they will do so more than 6 months in advance. That’s useful for getting first class seats together, or getting your preferred first class seats. It’s also useful as a business class passenger, because…
