52 Years Ago Eastern Flight 401 Crashed in the Everglades. Did Cockpit Crew Haunt The Airline?
Eastern Air Lines Flight 401 departed New York for Miami on December 29, 1972. The Lockheed L-1011 crashed into the Florida Everglades. Both pilots and the flight engineer died, along with 2 out of 10 flight attendants and 96 of the 163 passengers on board. There were 75 survivors.
According to lore, one flight was cancelled after the ghost of Captain Bob Loft appeared and disappeared in front a three members of the flight’s crew. Another flight’s captain reported seeing flight engineer Don Repo in his cockpit. Repo told him there would never be another crash of an L-1011.

The incident marks the deadliest air disaster involving a South Korean airline in nearly three decades.

A Voepass ATR 72-500, registered as PS-VPB, tragically crashed near São Paulo, Brazil today, while operating flight 2Z-2283 from Cascavel to São Paulo Guarulhos Airport. The aircraft was carrying 62 people on board, including 58 passengers and 4 crew members.
40 Years Ago Today Trans American Flight 209 Made a Miracle Landing in Chicago
On March 5, 1980 Trans American flight 209 from Los Angeles made a miraculous landing in Chicago after the pilot Captain Clarence Ovuer and First Officer Roger Murdock suffered incapacitation due to food poisoning during the flight.
One of the flight attendants, Elaine Dickinson, managed to activate the aircraft’s auto pilot while a passenger on the flight, Ted Stryker, took the controls.
Boeing 737 Broke Apart After Overrunning Runway In Istanbul
A Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737 touched down in bad weather at Istanbul’s second airport (Sabiha, code SAW) after flying from Izmur, Turkey. Flight PC 2193 overran runway 6 and hit the airport’s perimeter wall. The plane broke into 3 parts. An engine that separated caught fire.
There were 183 passengers and crew on board. It took nearly five hours to free everyone from the wreckage. One person is reported to have perished, and 157 taken to area hospitals. All six crew on board were injured.
A Boeing 737 Either Did – Or Did Not – Crash Today
A government-owned Ariana Afghan Airlines Boeing 737 operating a domestic Kandahar – Kabul flight reportedly has crashed in the country’s central Ghazni province, in Taliban-controlled territory around 1:25 p.m. local time on Monday. That’s according to a provincial government spokesperson, and confirmed by the country’s Second Vice President. Local reports suggest 83 souls on board.
The airline, however, denies this.
Air France Accident
An Air France plane skidded off the runway after landing in Toronto and caught fire around 4pm Eastern. Early reports are that most passengers are safe, but this is not yet certain. Thoughts and hopes are with the passengers and crew. Update: Everyone made it out alive, with just a few injuries.
