We’ve known this was coming for some time, and the price of seat assignments in business class on Lufthansa was even published back in December, but it’s officially here: ‘Allegri$$ Day’.
There’s not a single American or European carrier amongst the world’s top business class offerings. However if we were to pick one to include it would have to be Air France? And their best business class is onboard Airbus A350s with their newest seat.

An American Airlines business class passenger from Los Angeles to London Heathrow on Saturday was not happy about her seat. Flight 134 is on a four-cabin aircraft with first class, and she was “complaining she’s in [business class] instead of first class” according to a nearby passenger, and was “demanding the person who booked her be fired.”
American Airlines is eliminating Flagship First Class on these Boeing 777-300ERs, and introducing business class suites with doors as well (and also on new delivery Boeing 787-9s). That project is delayed, so I wonder whether the ‘imminent’ replacement of seats is what leads to a more haphazard approach to cabin maintenance.
The armrests on the seat lower to align with the seat platform and can bear over 500 pounds, facilitating transfers for passengers with mobility impairments. The seat design allows horizontal or assisted transfers without significant obstacles due to pitch of at least 42 inches.
It’s not enough for American to put the seats into service, and be subject to any complaints for violating accessibility rules. Any technical non-compliance requires prior exemption.

Delta Air Lines is preparing to revamp their entire approach to business class. That means ‘choose your own adventure’ good, better, and best fare types as well as new bedding, meals and amenities – and a round of training for flight attendants to provide a more elevated service. This is all prompted by plunging net promoter scores for Delta One compared to pre-pandemic levels.
The American Airlines retrofit plan of its Boeing 777-300ERs is called Project Olympus. These Boeing 777-300ERs are getting a lot more seats – and a lot more premium seats – 84 to 114 total premium seats, without losing any coach seats. In order to do this, it means that current seats have to be squeezed and so do lavatories.
